Watermarks? Where, Location! Location! Location?

Where do you place your watermarks? Center of the image? Where do you think is the best location to help protect your images?

I usually don't bother with them - they will not prevent someone from "stealing" your images and I'm not a pro, so I don't advertise. When I do use them, I usually take the lower right edge.

I don't bother with them either. Especially the photos posted here when most don't even include a larger download. They are so tiny what is someone going to do with a 100kb image even if they did steal it?

But if you do use one please do not make it HUGE and put it practically in the middle of your photo.
Very distracting and often looks ridiculous and much less professional then you might think.

Thanks for including the article reference. That makes the point!

I had never put a watermark on my photos until I discovered two of my photographs on other sites. One was a state park and the other, (I can't remember) but the person had been able to "repost" or link from flickr to the site. In both cases, it wasn't until after I said something the photo was either removed or someone then asked permission to use it. So, since I have some photos to be in an upcoming squirrel book, I've been watermarking overkill. I don't want to be beaten to publication, if you know what I mean. And, yes, they have been copyrighted thru the Library of Congress and I have certificate in hand, but I am too poor to afford a lawyer to fight for my rights.

If I took a photo that was good enough that someone wanted to steal I'd call them up and say: Thank you! Tell them where it came from!! :)

For years I never used watermarks, until two of my photos were credited to someone else. I enjoy it when someone uses my online photos, as long as I get a credit. I place my watermark on the lower right of the photo.

Yeah I'm not too worried people are going to be stealing my photos and making huge amounts of cash off of them or anything. I've seen some of my pics end up on other sites and they have either been credited to me or used for some type of display example. Not a big deal, and I'm actually flattered.
I had one pic that was on the Nat Geo site for a while and that ended up in several places worldwide. But I would see my name and Nat Geo in the credit line and that was kinda cool I thought.
And if some poor sap wants to try to make $20 off one of pics, well so be it. I generally give them away to most anyone that asks nicely anyway.

I'll have to agree! If someone thought they had to steal a picture from what I've shot, then when they get to the "pearly gates", they'll probably be caught lying there!

I was very impressed (with myself) when a relative asked if it was alright to use one of my pictures! I said it was fine with me. If they got it from me (and they did) then I must have been very happy with the shot to have passed it on.

I would be getting more than enough satisfaction just to know that someone else liked it enough to use it someway.

I could watermark my photos but why distroy the view!
