I normally use manual but when in a situation where there is a lot of action I have used "Auto" just because I can't keep up anymore like I used to.

All I can say Tom, is I expect you'll be posting some portraits soon that rival Captain C's, now that you have a fancy schmantzy new camera.

I have a brother in law who owns Nikon equipment and he always shoots in AUTO. His pictures have less appeal and no color. He went to Africa on a photo safari and came back with a couple hundred photos that were verging on gray. I told him to give them to me before he did anything else. I processed them all in Lightroom and brought back the detail and the colors. I showed him the before and after. He couldn't believe it. I explained what he should do. He agreed. He has been on 2 other trips and all were shot in AUTO. There are people who want the best because then the only thing that can improve is the photographer. Others believe their photos magically become great using good equipment. Ranting is just a good way to vent the frustrations you have with others (and sometimes yourself). Now that it is out, enjoy your week.

The way I look at it, anyone can take bad picture. It is just that those bad pictures are of a better quality with better equipment. Lol.

They are the one's who spend a ton of money on countless lenses and gadgets thinking it will make them a better photographer. As to the "What Should I Take" crowd, it is just a way of bragging about where they are going and how much equipment they have.
Oh, I did not know that. I just thought those people were just stupid. Lol. Now I get it.

If one never use the manual mode I think it's fine. I only have 1 recommendation is that if you think you ever want to use the manual mode then start out using it first and then move on to any of the auto modes. That would make the learning process easier. At least you wouldn't be stuck on Auto.
True.

I confess that I bought a bridge camera to take with me to Israel for the last two weeks. I used it in 'auto' most of the time (JPG) but also used the various other modes in RAW (P, A, S, etc) when I had time to properly compose or artistically manipulate an image. I did it because I thought my Sony would have been too heavy and taken too much space due to baggage restrictions on the tour. We were also on the move constantly and had to snap 'n go. If it were a dedicated photo tour with adequate space and time I would have taken the Sony and a couple lenses. As it were I also brought a new pre-owned Gorillapod that I don't think I used more than once during the whole trip. I hadn't been overseas for many years and if I probably was a more efficient packer I could have used the Sony (brought too much stuff!).

What??? You did not bring the Sony? Oh, my God! Remind me never to take you with me on a trip. Seriously, I hear you though. I got a Gorilla pod as a gift and so, a few years ago, I tried it out once while on a trip. It did not trip my trigger. I don't know where the hell it is. I don't even know if I still have it (this coming from a guy whom never throws anything out.

I’m sure every salesperson has had a customer come in and and say, “Which camera takes the best pictures?”

Salesperson: “Well… that would be the Nikon D5! It takes the BEST pictures, no question. $6500. Oh, and you’ll need a few lenses with that”.
There ya' go!

True. And, as we all know, if the focus point is on the tree in the background instead of on your subject… guess what?

But, with some, such as myself, my eyes aren’t getting any better. I find myself relying on the AF not because it’s easier, but because I’m just not sure I’m getting the best focus on my own. Sure, the AF isn’t perfect, but it helps.
Notice that I did not say a word about auto focus? My eyes are shot! Hopefully the narrow focus feature on this camera will help with that.

Tainkc...while your post may have been tongue in cheek it does have some valid points

I think there are two types of photographers...those who go with the high end stuff thinking they will get better shots...and those who want to learn photography so they can get better shots...

My wife is a good example...5 years ago she couldn't spell f stop and started shooting with an SX 50...then learned the camera and about the different modes...

She went thru a series of cameras until she bought an 810...now she shoots Manual...because she understands the basics of photography...she studied ways to make her shots better...and she is getting damn good

Personally, I use Aperture Priority which, I suppose, would be “semi”-auto, as I’m more interested in depth-of-field.
Oh, no! Nothing wrong with aperture priority, or using shutter priority for that matter. Both require some thinking to get that shot just right.

As soon as I saw your avatar, I knew something was coming! Lol. But you are right. Now, my bad photos will at least look even badder. Seriously, I bought this camera well for one, my A580 is starting to crap out from so much usage (perhaps too many bad pics taken). Also, I have 14, A mount lenses that I use (now 15 because the camera came bundled) and I simply could not afford to re-invest; not with a kid in medical school anyway. In addition, I am sold on the I.Q. which Sony produces. There are also many features that are inside of this camera which are of interest to me. The eye focus feature, which I could see as being useful for my portraiture (which sucks). There is also a feature that will follow you subject in a crowd. That will come in handy when doing street photography. One more feature I would like to mention is the feature where you can adjust the field of focus so that the camera ignores things that you don't want it picking up on like chain link fences (zoos come to mind) and tall grasses when you are trying to focus on a building or something. The video might be another thing since I did not do much of it with my Sony A580 since it is manual focus only while in video mode.
