Pedernales Falls State Park

My wife and I took a short trip to the Pedernales River Falls near Johnson City, Texas. We had lots and lots of rain a few weeks ago and the river was running nicely for photos. For the most part I used a 10-24mm Tamron lens and secondly a 24-70. All shots were from a tripod with remote shutter release. I used a variable ND filter to extend the shutter speed when needed. I spent early morning and late evening crawling over the rocks and getting into position for what I hoped would be some great shots. I'll let you be the judge of whether I succeeded or not. The first shot is taken from an overlook to show the distance and layout of the falls.

Nice sets Gary, esp the last one. Well compose and exposure was great.

I agree the composition and exposure are wonderful. Some people tend to go too long or too short to capture moving water, but you got it right for my taste.

It's probably the ND, but the white balance or something seems off. At first glance the photos (except the last one) look like very old color prints. Did you shoot these in raw so you can play with the white balance?

I did shoot in RAW and I do like to work on them a little, sometimes maybe too much. I actually did more to the last one than any of them to bring out the morning colors that I saw with my eyes. Thanks for taking a look and taking time to comment.

I admire your dedication in scrabbling over rocks to find the optimum positions. I too like the last best.

Thank you. I like variety so I try posting several different compositions and edits to see what people like best. Glee you enjoyed them.

Gary, nice set! Really like the last one. Which nd filter, and for how long. I'm trying to figure them out. Thanks Ron

I am using the Tiffen Variable ND with up to 8 stops. What I did was to set my ISO to 100 and the shutter speed to between 1.5 and 3 seconds and then set the f-stop at 16 to start with and finally I would increase the darkness of the filter until my exposure meter read correct. I used that as a starting point and varied from there. The ND filter gives you a fourth way to control the light intensity. Once you experiment for a while it gets easier. I also downloaded an app for determining the correct exposure when your shutter speed goes over 30 seconds. It's called Long Exposure Calculator.
