This is a great Seafood joint in Point Loma (San Diego) where my wife and I dined the other day. I took the shot with my cell phone as I wanted to remember the name of the place as we were leaving. I liked the shot, considering it was just from my phone, then I thought it might make for a great candidate for a day to night transformation. Does it work for you?

Really splendid work Don. I might suggest a bit more work on the area between the umbrellas if you go to print.

Thanks Frank. Certainly not going to print, merely an exercise.

I know you were just "exercising" - lol - but I'd prefer with the lighthouse light off or subdued as its brightness overwhelms the rest. But very cool to see the transformation and how well you do it.

For others interested, Dave Chinn posted a tutorial in FYC of day-to-night and Anvil posted steps to doing similar in a share topic (b&w processing tips).

Don, thank you for continuing to share your talents. You are an inspiration to the forum!

Masterful - which stands to reason as we know your capabilities Don. I would be very happy if it were mine.

Wonderful illustration on the impacts of light. While there are certainly enough hours of light in a day, the most precious of the lights for outdoor phtographers is sunrise and sunset. I think most in these forums are sleeping and eating and missing much of it. Nice shot, try BW for even more light drama.

Linda, I do appreciate your kind words — thank you. I thought about the lighthouse a few times and played with it off and subdued. It worked bright for me based on long the shadows cast by the guy on the left with his dog. The patio lights wouldn't be strong enough to cast that shadow, but the lighthouse brightly lit combined with the patio lights, I can make a reasonable case for not eliminating that shadow. Make sense?

I have seen Dave mention in another post that he is a fan of day into night work. Didn't know he put together a tutorial. I'll have to check it out and see if we do it the same way. Perhaps he has some thing unique to add to what I already do.

Thanks for pointing out the shadows! And wouldn't it be fun to have a "day to night" challenge between you and Dave? Let the games begin

Thank you sir! I learned how to do this about two years ago and now I'm always looking to see how I can turn some old shots I really like from day to night.

Thank you for your kind praise, magnetoman. Actually, I'm quite happy with it as well, however, I think I'll take Frank up on his suggestion to add a bit more light to the umbrella area upstairs.

Outstanding Don !!! I like everything about this image. I have to ask, do you ever regret taking something like this with your phone rather than you DSLR?
