I have an interest in portrait photography. I found a friend who would pose and now I would like some opinions on composition, lighting, really any thing pertaining to making this a better photograph. I don't have a studio; this was shot in the basement where I work, because I like the light and background. I did the best I could with the software I have to remove two tattoos from her arms.

Keep your comments constructive as much as possible. Have fun! - Pat

For me the background distract from any model. It is too cluttered and distracting. Soft ware is not the problem. You need to work on your lighting also. Go to you tube or Strobist and and get some lighting tips for similar situation.

Only my thoughts here so take them for what they are worth. :-)

1. Pose and light look nice
2. If she has tattoos, they should remain on her no matter how YOU feel about them. Unless SHE asked you to remove them.
3. I find the background too distracting...too many objects in there catching my eye.
4. Background looks too "dirty" for such a nicely dressed and made up model.

Again...just MY thoughts. Others will certainly disagree.

To start with, I would have pulled the model further away from the background and blow it out.
Use the lowest aperture setting available for your camera, shallow DOF...

She wanted the tattoos gone if possible and she liked the setting.
I have her in a horse carriage which looks pretty good.

You need to post a downloadable version. From the thumbnail, it seems the focus is soft on the model, but I can't really tell without being able to zoom into the details. The background might have worked with the clutter, but if the aperture was wider and the background blurred more. But, these are just guesses without access to a detailed version of the image...

Yeah, I would have done that except I couldn't get far enough away from her in this location to do that. I did do that in front of a '59 Ford

I agree with you on the focus being a bit soft and the background being blurred a bit more. I have a bit of trouble seeing to focus, because we are shooting in existing (dim) light. Thanks for your thoughts!
