Anyone built their own 'sporter' rifle, from an 80% lower kit? What was your experience, good, bad, other? Any manufacturers you'd recommend? Or not? Would you do it again?

I've helped a few friends and family. All good experience's. Can be done with a hand drill (did 1 that way) but I highly recommend a drill press. Even a cheap under $100 one worked fine. Best get one that comes with all the jigs and frills. Most company us include them but read the details. Cant recommend one company over other. Look for deals. A lot have blemished sales. Fully functional but the color generally didn't mix well. Once the lower is drilled out the fun starts. Picking all the parts needed to complete the build. Some people buy everything from one company mostly assembled. I buy all my stuff individually from a combination of company web sites and ebay. I take months to build because I'm cheap and look for lowest prices. If you want to buy all the parts up front build would take about 1/2 day to full days doing it slow and relaxed based on your comfort level. The anxiaty comes at the first shot. "Did I build that right?" Enjoy, I do build with my son as a project. Next is a 1911 from an 80%. Cheaper to buy than build but where's the fun there.

I haven't personally but I do know several who have and as long as you use quality parts you'll end up with a quality product. I own two Colts, an M4 style and a Colt Custom Shop Competition Heavy Barrel. It'll take the eye out of a terrorist target at further than my old eyes can see.

I have done 2. I happen to be a machinist who works in a shop that has a CNC milling machine and was able to come in early before work and do this. My son bought two of these receivers and the jig for the machining. His is a 300 blackout, and mine is a 5.56 heavy barreled target rifle. One nice thing about doing on this particular mill is that I did a little custom engraving on the side that would normally have the manufacturers logo like S&W, DPMS etc. and put my name with a serial number that I just made up. I found the quality to be there and the tolerances were exact and the thing shoots real nice.

Maybe you should brag about a lot ......except that part .....now the ATF will be looking into this ....sorry to say !

I'm thinking this OP was just waiting for this type of thing.....I wouldn't trust anybody on UHH when they talk about guns.
Last I read they fined some poor dude $100k for selling a few self made "lowers"....Never mess with the Feds when it comes to firearms!
Just keep your mouth shut and your powder dry is a good policy !

Get up to speed on current laws before making statements like that. There is nothing illegal about this rifle. Purchased through a reputable company in a perfectly legal manner. If you want to live in a paranoid, conspiracy minded world that's your business.
Engaging brain before opening mouth is a good policy too.

OP here. Man, I've been called a lot of things in my life, but never been called a 'federal snitch'. They are completely LEGAL, unless, like you said, 'some poor dumbass', was finishing them, then selling an ILLEGAL lower. Thanks for everyone else's replies.
