To Round Things Off - A Digital Painting of Mrs Hilary Clinton

Shakey Loc: Traveling again to Norway and other places.

I had fun with this as there are so many photgraphs of Hilary, and most of them are not very flattering. I thought "What the heck, I'll claim artist's licence and see what happens." You'll notice that I did play down the lines and crows feet somewhat. It's my portrait and not a photograph.
In my opinion it is Hilary; I hope you think so, too. You'll need to zoom in to see the brush work, I was ultra kind. I am pleased with this portrait. In my opinion it needs no further work.
If you want to tell me otherwise, please feel free to comment. You opinions on digital painting are often helpful.
I do not give you permission to create ugly caricatures of this presidential candidate no matter what your feelings about her may be. Got that? Thank you for your forbearance.

It looks nice, but I don't know enough about digital painting to comment on the qualify of work, and mostly wonder what she would think. S-

It's a nice job, but she seems very orange on my monitor. Maybe that was your intent?

Shakey, a fine effort, no doubt. However, I do have a few comments ...

First is her skin tone: I thought it was way to orange and then thought, maybe it's my monitor. However, someone else has mentioned skin tone as well. A good skin tone when digital painting is in the 18-22% magenta and 20-24% yellow range. Of course that also depends on lighting and an intended look. For a traditional-type portrait like this, I would try to hit that range.

The other glaring issue I have is with highlights and midtones, especially on the right side of her mouth. The right side of her face looks especially flat around her mouth — like she's seen Nancy Pelosi's plastic surgeon one too many times! Her smile line would appear on that side of her mouth as well, although the light would fall on it differently. Also her teeth transition from a highlight to a shadow with no transition to midtones. Either make the last bright tooth on HER right side darker or a dark tooth or two brighter, to create a more realistic transition through your midtones.

The midtones and highlights can be painted on or can be acheived with a dodge & burn layer — or a combination of both. Those are some of my comments. Hope it helps and keep up the fine work.

Now this is just a quick 30-minute sample of what I was talking about. Again, it is all subjective and you may hate what I have done.

Yep, I did go for the orange skin tone (it looks better on my old monitor). Your alternative version is way too pale for my old eyes, but that's just me. Thanks for your helpful comment. Maybe I'll try toning things down a little.

I have to say if you think that this is a good photo as far a color balance and tone it is time for you to get a new monitor or time for you to invest in a monitor tune up kit.
The color is way to orange. I seen your other 2 photos and both were very complimentary and respectful to the subject. So I can only conclude that you intentionally made this photo look the way it does.
Maybe you should try doing this one over as it is not the same quality nor is it respectful of the subject .. Just my opinion ..

It's nice. My only comment would be ... her teeth. They look like their hanging inside of her mouth without actually being part of her; more like attached to her, especially her right side.

No way was it my intention to be disrespectful, MyPharo. I do need a new monitor, mine is now into its teens, but my travel needs always come first. My son has told me she looks as though she spent too long in the tanning salon. I had endless trouble with her teeth, no way was I really happy with them, but that's digital painting - sometimes you get it right and other times you fall flat on your face. Maybe I'll try again from scratch.

I don't disagree, Howard. See the post above.

Thanks for your kind comment, Nanaval, but not good enough. I'll work on a new Hillary while on my travels.

Another frustrated idiot.
