This is from Nikon.

"Thank you for contacting Nikon USA customer support. It is not necessary to turn the VR off prior to removing the lens from the camera. As the VR will not be active until the shutter button is depressed half way
Regards,
Elizabeth"

Thanks,good info/confirmation.
I never turn the VR or AF switch off before removing a lens, but I do turn the camera off (same for removing memory card).

Just as anticipated. Common sense, and not contrary to manual.

If common sense was so common, it wouldn't need a name.

Never underestimate the scarcity of common sense.

Ants are the most common insect in the world. So by your logic, they don't need a name.

That puts a big hole in the fable about The Grasshopper and the . . .

The lens manual is misleading and leads you to believe it is a potential problem. The fact that it confuses many customers attests to the confusion they cause.

There was a thread on this some months ago. It was a while before someone interjected this understanding.

Some still think it applies to Sigma lenses. I suspect not there either when the camera is off.

I always leave VR on when removing my lens. Especially if I have had a lot of coffee. It reduces the risk of me dropping it. LOL!

Hey Jerry. That's good to know. The manual that came with my D3000 says to turn it off even before turning the camera off. If not, it could cause some clattering in the lens. I have acidently left it in the on position and have never had that trouble. I will just start leaving it on and not worry about it.

It's just a case of poorly-worded directions. They don't want you to remove the lens while your finger is pressed halfway down on the shutter button.

According to the instructions on my Sigma 150-500mm, they specifically say to turn OS (VR) off. I believe they might have said autofocus, too.
There's not much on the instruction sheet. About 1000 words of instruction in 7 languages ,
