I own both 50mm 1.8G and 85mm 1.8G. I found myself using 85mm more often because I like to isolate the subject. This photo was shot with 85mm on D7000 which is DX body, the distance to the subject was around 10-12 feet.

I found my Nikon 85mm 1.4 to be an excellent lens for portraits ... It was a new Nano and sharp as a tack on my 800E and 810 ... I just had to have this lens when I was purchasing all my good glass . .., It sat in my safe for years .. I rarely do portraits ... Good for indoor ... So I sold it .... I have shot great portraits with 200-400 ... 24-70 .. And 50mm 2.8...even the 105 2.8 ....
I have seen excellent portrait shots with 50mm 2.8 4.0 ... All depends on the background .., lighting .. Subject ...camera .. Effect desired ...heck .. I could take a dynamite portrait shot with my 200-500 ....
