I have just got a Canon Lens EF 50mm F1.8 II for my Canon 1100D (Rebel T3).

What type of pics will I use this for. I got it initially for portrait photography. Will it be any good for night time shots of the stars

Your assistance would be appreciated

It is probably the best general purpose lens that has been around since the 1960's.

The best answer to your question is to use it for anything you want as you decide how it can best serve you along with whatever other lenses you may have.
There is no right answer. Do what works for you and have fun doing it!!

Hi RonRhu: Here is a great website that covers all of Canon lenses. The EF 50mm1.8 II is considered a prime len, with good quality optics but low end lens mount because of the plastic mounting and is considered a great value for the money. It is a great all round lens. A 50 mm lens was the main lens used in film photography back in the day. Here is that website. http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html Hope this helps.

Ron, the 50/1.8 is a great lens. I have the 1.4 and I NEVER leave home w/o it. They are small and light. I don't use mine all that much since I have a full range of zooms but as soon as it starts to get a little dark or I go indoors, it is the ONLY lens that will do because of its' speed. It is twice as fast as the most expensive zoon and about the same IQ.
As for stars, it will do a great job. On you cam it will be a slight telephoto, seeing just a little closer than your eye does.
Put your cam on ISO 800, your cam on AV and the lens on 1.8 and go out and take some night shots. Ambient/available light shots are wonderful. I never use a flash. You will love it, AND it won't scare anybody. People don't flee into the shadows like with with a big, fat zoom pointed at them!
Enjoy it.

I second this..I've had the 1.8 and now have the 1.4 and they are my favorite lenses.

they are tack sharp and dependable. They'll do landscape, portraits, street, just about anything you can think of.

Here is a shot from my 50 1.8 and one from the 1.4:
