I took these two pictures seconds apart from slightly different angle. Any constructive comments on composition would be appreciated.
I was about six feet away from her shooting handheld through the pop-top roof of our vehicle while standing on the armrests of two seats. It was shortly after noon.
Nikon D5500, VR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G at 55mm, f/11, 1/2000s, aperture priority, ISO 2000, 14-bit raw.
I did post in PSE 14 using ACR 9.5
Shutter speed and ISO too high and a bit of overexposure.......very busy/close backround - I would shoot wide open with lens and focus on head with correct (lower) exposure .
As far as composition, I think you did a pretty good job under the circumstances. The first image doesn't have enough room to the right of the animal ... better in the second.
Rather than repeat ... heed what Imagemeister said.
Of course a better composition would have resulted if you got out of the vehicle, knelt down in front of the subject and said, "Open your eyes and smile".

I am impressed with the fur detail at that high an ISO!
Do you have any images with the eyes open and focus on the eyes? Makes a more compelling subject.
I'd lower highlights and maybe exposure a bit and add vignette. The brightness pulls eye from subject.

She might have damaged my camera.

IMHO the exposure on the head is correct. It is just that the background is very bright. I have many the same from recent Africa trip. Went to center weighted, spot, or some -EV to get exposures like these!
I agree that ISO and shutter speed are higher than needed. But the high shutter speed ensured sharpness and ISO noise does not appear to be a problem here. A couple stops lower on ISO and shutter would have been OK too.
Just need to darken background in post. Can also blur the background at the same time. And maybe crop from upper left to center head at upper left thirds point.
But images with eyes open would be much more compelling.
Thanks Mtnman. I will re-work the picture with your suggestions and look for one with her eyes open.
I wish that I could have posed her but she is a wild animal and we got what she would allow. With five other people in the vehicle, you get the shot that you can not always the best shot.

Yes, well aware of that from my recent trip!
ANY shot like this is wonderful, because you were there and you got it. I wonder why you were shooting at such high ISO at midday in full sun? I've done that accidentally when I moved from shade to sun and back again. Not having the eyes open doesn't bother me. it's a natural thing and I think it means the cat is relaxed.

That day the clouds were moving very rapidly and were very dense at times. The iso on this picture was a mistake. I forgot to adjust back to base.
