Sigma telephotos and dock

I have the older Sigma 50-500 mm lens without image stabilization and am not satisfied with the sharpness at 500 mm. Will the new 150-600 be noticeably sharper at 500-600 mm? Also, is the USB dock really useful?

Thanks.

IMHO the DOCK is one of the things that make the SIGMA much better. Just the idea of being able to update lens firmware without a round trip ride to service is a key for me. And yet the dock can do so much more. I don't believe that it will work with the 50-500 though. I don't have the older lens, but I do have the 150-600 Sport. Don't expect it to be as good as something like a Nikon 400/2.8, 500/f4 or 600/f4, but, for the money, it is a darned good lens! Best of luck.

Thanks for the response. I am thinking of selling the 50-500 which, of course, does not work with the dock and buying the 150-600 Contemporary. The Sport is too expensive for what I actually do. I am looking for real world experience with the dock. I know it is only $50 but I would buy it only if it lives up to the claims.

Since I bought it, I have used it twice to update firmware and three times for programming. It is well beyond what I paid for it, AND, it works with my two other Sigma lenses! I would buy it again and again and again! Just being able to update firmware makes it worth every penny. I am hoping Nikon releases something similar in the future. Best of luck. (It is being included for free with the sport version at present @ B&H).

Check the price of the sport on Greentoe. You might be surprised.

Price is the same as B&H, $1,799. About double the Contemporary. What do you suggest?

You could probably get it on Greentoe for about 1499.00. You would have to make a bid. Better than 1799.00.

Check amazon, some companies there sell the lens with the dock. usually for only $10.00 more in price.
There have been a few people here getting the sport for 1500 on Greentoe and the contemporary in the $800 range....

The dock is pretty useful. It makes it easy to update firmware and if you have a focus problem it will help you improve focus. In addition it also lets you preset certain focus distances that you use most often, which will increase how fast the lens autofocuses.

To me the Sigma Sport is definitely worth the extra money, but it is heavier and the Sigma contemporary is a lot easier to lug around.

I will go with the dock. Based upon my research, I decided to go with the Contemporary because the difference in optical quality is small but the extra weight is not.

Just last month I submitted a price of $875 for a 150-600C and Adorama picked up my price within and hour. Maybe I should have gone a little lower.

I had to keep checking back regularly and be ready to purchase as soon as one was in stock. They go very quickly.
