How many of you will consider those great landscape and flower shots precious in years to come or those snapshots you took of your family-- we have snapshots from years ago and they are precious to me--I have made them into slide shows--each one more precious than the other one--such great memories-- my beautiful landscape shots are still sitting on a hard drive-- sure the lighting was perfect and so was the focus but they can never compete with my precious snapshots from years ago made with an instamatic camera on 110 film rather than those beautiful landscape shots taken with a mega bucks digital camera and a perfect lens

Well, to each his own. I prefer to live in the here and now. I do look at pics I've taken years ago once in a while, but they are not arranged into slide shows or albums.

Although I take few people shots, the pictures from the past I appreciate the most are the ones with relatives.

Photos of my family, be it formal, candid or a snapshot, will always hold greater value than just a photo.

You're arguing apples and oranges. Of course your family photos are most precious to YOU but will mean very little to the general public. They will enjoy the landscapes with great interest, assuming you present and market them in a proper manner.

I noticed when looking at old snapshots of people, the large point of interest is often the cars. "that's Uncle Buck, and wow look at that 51' Lincoln convertible he's leaning on." The cars never seem important when taking the snapshot, but as the years go bye, they do, so I often will make sure to get a good pic with the cars if available.

All my precious snapshots from when I was growing up, got destroyed with water damage. Mom loaded them all from the basement, into an old chest type freezer, (outdoors) stacked newspaper on top, and held the lid open with something.
Bless her heart.

I agree with you. I do try and take "good" artsy photos but the ones that I have in the shoe box that mean the most to me are the family snaps...good or bad...blurry or not, whatever. They are the ones to cherish.

It's a different pot of fish stew. My ex was visiting her family in Japan. She went through some old storage and found an album from about 1925, some pix from during WWII, up to late 1950s. She brought the album back and I helped her get the images scanned and repaired (Lot's of fading--maybe needed more washout of the hypo?). She then made a new album with the best and on her last visit brought it back to the family. (Which is now all post-war.) These are very precious images indeed.

For me you've hit it. Your statement says why I don't do much landscape stuff. After you've seen it, you've seen it. Where as those family photos you can view over and over and a new little memory pops up every time.

I guess its an age thing: If your family snaps are recent its a shared memory - if they are ancient (to the younger generations) then its 'the differences' from nowadays that is more noticeable and notable. Early photographs seem to appeal to most people 'because they are old' not because they were great images. As for value - Donate them to an institution, eventually they will find a reason to exhibit them, give or take 100 years or so. ( your family will probably dump them or lose them at some time)

I enjoy viewing my landscape shots knowing that as I was shooting the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon my adorable children were in the back seat of my car, in the parking lot, beating the snot out of each other. Ahh, the memories!!
