I am trying to learn everything about my new Tamron 150-600 lens.

I am a little confuse about Focus Limiter, what it means and when I should use full or 15mm. Also what mode is best to shoot in, Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority?
I would also like to try panning when I get better at using the lens. Could somebody explain panning and how I go about using it?

Sorry for these types of questions, but I consider myself a beginner in photography and have a lot to learn.

Any help is appreciated.

Let's start with the simple answers. You asked about Aperture or Shutter priority. It depends upon what you are trying to achieve with the image you are taking. For example when I shoot wildlife, I want to freeze the action of the Eagle or Tiger, etc. So, I use shutter priority and decide what shutter speed I need to freeze the action and the camera system chooses your Aperture. When I want to control the Depth of field as to what is sharp in my image, I use Aperture. So, a setting of F4 does not give me much depth of focus where a F11 or 16 gives me more latitude as to what is sharp. I have a 150-600 and do not deal with the limiter switches. I want the ability to focus the full range from 150-600. The limiter does what it implies. It loimits what range your lens will focus on. Hope that helps.

Bingonut: thanks for asking the question. I have the Sigma 150-600 and have been curious about this too. Been experimenting and doing okay. Thanks PixelStan77 for responding. Question for Bingonut: Why do you have "BOTH" the Sigma 150-600 "AND" the Tamron 150-600. Was there something about the Sigma you didn't like?

Pixel stan gave an excellent answer now as for panning, Say your shooting a car as they go by you. You set your camera to stop the motion say 1/1000
and take the shot. The car will be stopped and the background will be in focus or out depending on your aperture setting. The look will be that everything is stopped.
In panning, you move your camera with the car as it goes by. You hit the shutter and in the pic, the car will be in focus but the background will show the blur from the movement . showing that the carwas moving, ive attached a pic of a taxi showing the movement , I didnt take this pic,

Focus Limiter, Im sure someone here will have more and better info, but here goes. A focus limiter restricts the range of distances the camera will attempt to focus .

Most cameras when they can't lock on focus will have the lens hunt through the full range of focus distances until something is detected, with a focus limiter that distance is shorter and the camera will focus quicker as it didnt have to hunt thru the entire range.

with a big lens like that I would say use the limiter for shooting things close up but not say animals in the distance.
Hope this helps. or clear as mud????

Thanks again, your information is good.

The lens has a switch for the limiter, either full or 15mm. They say full for close up and 15 for normal pictures.

The choices are Full or 15-Infinity
Just a small correction (or clearer explanation). Use the FULL for closer than 15 and the 15-infinity for things farther away.

Anyone from Cape Cod is worth helping. First, the focus limiter, if most of your subjects are at least 15 meters away, about 45 feet, use the 15 meters to infinity setting. You can usually, at 500 to 600 mm, shoot at the infinity setting, it will help you focus faster. I use Aperture Priority when shooting birds, I want the lens at least one stop down from max. I believe your lens is 6.3, so your stop down would be between f8 and f11. Then adjust your ISO so your shooting at least around 1/1000 sec. Panning is simple, as you follow your subject, don't stop to take your shot. Keep the camera moving as you take your shot, this will take some practice, I used to practice on shooting passing cars until I got the hang of it. Use continuous auto focus on your camera and shoot at the highest frames per second that you can. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Focus Limiter - what it does is to prevent the lens from focusing on anything with the limited distance, only beyond that. For instance if you set the limiter distance for 50 feet than the lens will only focus on objects beyond 50 feet.

Thanks BboH for your reply.

How do you set it? My focus limiter only shows full or 15.

My Sigma has a switch on the side (along with others) Full: focus from the close focus distance to infinity; 10m to infinity: focus only beyond 10m; and 2.6 - 10m: will not focus within these distances. It can also be programed for additional distances.
