A most beautiful resting place.

The Bonnaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia is considered by many to be in the top ten beautiful cemeteries of the US. I would have to agree. It is peaceful with huge trees draped with Spanish Moss which feel like blankets enveloping you. But at the same time somewhat spooky. One tour group has permission to do night tours, but only on Saturdays....
Maps with tons of historical information are available, making a trip to Bonnaventure a very memorable one!
Little Gracie, by the way, was a very vivacious six-year old, well known in Savannah, who died of Yellow Fever in 1899.
Looking at this set I am a little unhappy that I used the "Remove color cast" tool of PSE - it rendered the photos all with a somewhat different color cast. Most of the original photos have a tremendous green cast because of the surrounding wet greenery that day. It makes the photos interesting, but definitely a little too green.
It's a bit ghoulish but interesting just the same?
Gorgeous stuff sb. Wonderful subjects, with a distinct atmosphere of "old southern."

Absolutely. We spent a few days in Savannah earlier this week. In spite of the tropical storm we had fun - it is a very interesting and fun city to visit!

Having visited hundreds of cemeteries/graveyards over the years, I suggest that the term "goulish" is inappropriate. Funerary art is some of the best we have, particularly the slate folk art of New England. My screen name "Stonecherub" refers to the cherubs carved on slate gravestones.
In 2002, my wife and I were at the Association for Gravestone Studies annual convention in Savannah. When I got on the bus for the tour of Bonaventure, I had a heart attack and wound up in the hospital. I was the only patient they had who really wanted to go to the cemetery.
Here are two images quickly grabbed from my collection, slates from Boston and not of the best quality.
Excellent and interesting set Steve.

I went to college in Boston and they let you do charcoal rubbings of the gravestones. So many were so interesting and unusual. It became so popular they had to stop it - afraid people would damage the markers.

Apparently there is a smaller cemetery nearby which also has benches overlooking the Savannah River. We did not get there.
