This is one of my baseball shots. Like so much of my sports I like to use very shallow DoF to mix journalism with art to isolate the subject!
This is Junior College ball. I like it because you can get pretty close to the action but they're still darned good.
And yes, this was shot through the foul ball netting!! Enjoy

Cool shot, SS!! I've been waiting and hoping to see you post some pics in this section! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks Patty! Unfortunately I don't shoot much of the big sports, so can't really post much of that. Most of my stuff is a bit more fringe sports than mainstream. So don't want to completely bore you guys with everything bicycles, which is what I shoot a lot of!!
Thanks!

Not to be mean. This photo not in focus at all. Was that intentional?

No editor would publish that photo; they would say it is out of focus. Editor's have their own rules and criteria they follow and most will not vary from it if their life depended on it. From a photographers point of view they are half crazy many times but they have the final say of what gets published and what don't. Generally, the smaller the publication, the more loose they are on the rules.

T, no meanness felt and thanks for looking. any and all critique is always valuable!
Yes, most of this image is intentionally OOF. In journalism competitions, this image has been one of my most successful. It has garnered three Best of Shows. In my local N4C division of the PSA it went far enough to be displayed at the annual convention and was my clubs Journalism image of the year(my club has over 200 members).
It has seen no less than two dozen judges. Probably at least a few noticed that it is OOF.
Just my own way of thinking, but a weak shot needs to have gobs of technical merit, a strong shot much less.
Thanks for looking.

I really like how the ball is in focus ... it adds a lot of drama ... keeps pulling your eye between each player and the ball ... very dynamic. BTW ... how in the heck did you manage to focus on the ball moving towards you at 70 mph?

The only way I know of, timspix, is to prefocus at that distance, then use high speed shutter, and a small A for shallow DOF, and use the one that the ball, just happens to be in focus.

Personally I don't care for it much, but it has kind of a unique feel to it. Still, I wouldn't have submitted to the paper because it wouldn't have been published.
