Still trying to figure everything out here. Lol. Stumbled upon the "Introduce Yourself" option in the new topics section (which I overlooked yesterday). Anyways...
Hi I'm George and I live in Winnetka CA (San Fernando Valley) with my wife, my mom and two sons. I'm originally from New York City. I came out here to go to school in the early 80's and couldn't leave this SoCal weather. I've been a Pentaxian since the late 70's. But feel it's now time to move to a brand more industry standard and hopefully a bit more customer focused. Canon, Sony, and Nikon are currently on my radar. But my 'extensive' research still leaves me very undecided. I shoot mainly portraits (editorial to candid - in studio and out). But I do like to dabble in macro photography a bit also. Any feedback/suggestions that I can get from the Ugly Hedgehog community is greatly appreciated. I look forward to learning and growing with you all.
All are good brands and so is Pentax. You'll get lots of opinions here! If you can actually look at some of the cameras that interest you and see how they fit your hands, that's a help. And how user-friendly the controls are.
Welcome, George! I've gone mirrorless with Sony a couple of years ago and haven't regretted it. But decide for yourself, hold them all in the stores if you can, get what's comfortable, or a weight you can live with. For the most part, I don't think you can tell which camera took what shot when it's posted, as it's the guy or girl behind the viewfinder that makes the difference.

Welcome to the forum!!!
Any of those brands should do you a good job.
I've been with Canon for years. Don't remember why....

Welcome to UHH.

Welcome to the Hog.
I use mostly Canon, a 6D and a 7DII.
If they notice your question you should be prepared to be assaulted by the true believers all swearing that their choice is the greatest thing since sliced bread and the rest of us are to be pitied for not seeing that.
What is your budget? This is so we can avoid recommending something way above your $ range or way below what you are willing to spend to get the quality/features you want. Some will do so anyway. I have seen $6000 body only pro models recommended to someone who stated a budget below $1000.
Welcome to the Hog, George. You'll find lots of friends & plenty of good advice here. I carry a Sony Alpha 850 mostly because I already had a selection of Minolta Alpha mount lenses. If I knew then what I know now, I'd probably go with Nikon. You can't go wrong with whatever brand you choose. The best advice I can give is find a camera shop & handle several different models. Make sure it fits you.
All great advice! And thank you all for the welcome. :) It's probably why I'm become so obsessed on this quest for the perfect camera. Lol. Because there is no such thing. Only what's the right camera/lens for me. I will certainly miss Pentax. But there are other viable options out there. And blind loyalty is not always the way to go. We had a good run. Might be different if I was actually making a living with photography. But since I only shoot professionally on an occasional basis and mainly just shoot for my own enjoyment, I predict I will find the right fit for under $3000 in relatively short order by visiting a few reputable stores. Treepusher, you are absolutely correct. It is the guy or gal behind the camera that makes the difference. Thanks. Gonna go post my first photo here now. :)
Welcome to the group. Enjoy researching the new gear, I think that's the most fun.
Welcome to the Hog George, I hope you find what you are looking for.

Welcome!
Don't give up on Pentax just yet. Check out their K1 and K3. Although I am a Nikon user (D750) I still use my old and trustworthy Pentax for film black & white.
