I've been waiting since last autumn for my goofy little friends, the Killdeer Plover, to return to the stony field in Oaks, PA by the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. I've always enjoyed the playful antics of the Killdeer and who can resist those big orange eyes.

Like the ride in the pic also.

I know where the Skippack drains into the Perkiomen. 8^) I rarely get up to the Skippack area although I don't work too far from that area, just south of Collegeville. I occasionally make it up to Green Lane. I spend a good deal of time looking for photographs along the Perkiomen. The Killdeer nest in a big stone field/storage lot between the Perkiomen and the Expo Center in Oaks. When the weather permits, GWEN is my daily ride...

I live right near the Perkiomen Airport.
My mailing address is Collegeville. I work in Paoli and go through Oaks every morning and evening.

What a small world we live in. I grew up just up the road from Paoli and live just down the road from Paoli. Technically I pass near Paoli (a little to the north) on my way to work, in Oaks, daily. Are you one of those folks in the long line of traffic on Ferry Lane or Country Club road, headed towards the cork screw at diamond rock? I'm one of the lucky ones going in the opposite direction.

Yep, that is me in those lines, there is a side road around it but that doesn't always work.

On days when I'm running a little late in the morning, I just get on 202 north at 401, exit onto 422 and fly up 422 to Oaks. If I'm not in a hurry, the weather's nice and I'm on the bike I take the back roads. Going home it's almost always the back roads, Pawlings road to Ferry lane to Country Club. I usually turn off at Clothier Springs then onto Howell road to Yellow Springs to 29. That way I don't have to put up with the 422/202 evening rush nightmare and the construction bottleneck at 202 and 401. I'm always going opposite the heavy traffic. I've seen the traffic back there back up for over a mile. I'd lose what little hair I have left...

A really good spot for photographing Red winged black birds is along the trail at the parking lot where Station AVE T's into Pawlings. I've also shot Cedar Waxwings, Mockingbirds and lots of Turkey Vultures back there. Another good spot for RWBB's and Barn Swallows and Starlings and Indigo Buntings is the old stone barn at the Pawlings Farm section of Valley Forge Park. I've seen the occasional Hawk back there also. Lots of big fields and trees and trails and the Schuylkill river.

Don't know if you're into flying fauna photography but I guessed maybe since you looked at a posting titled Killdeer Plover. Most non-bird wise people wouldn't know what that is. It almost sounds like a fake name.

Killdeer are more commonly a shore bird but can be found pretty far inland if the environment suites them. The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and surrounding location is an ideal environment for these birds. Large gravel field with sparse vegitation, lots of well lit parking lots, and a near by river, a Killdeer plover's paradise. They usually nest on the ground and you can always tell when you get close to one of their nests. They do this broken wing diversion thing where they partially extend one wing and start flopping around to distract a predator away from the nest. They're fun to watch...
