Take a look at the Spider Pro belt system.
It's a waist belt takes all the weight off your neck.
I love it.

get a cotton carrier. It has saved my back for 6-7 hours of shooting with heavy lenses.

I've been using the black rapid strap for about 4 years and never experienced any problems. I've used it as much as 12 hrs a day for a week or two at a time.

I've been a photographer with progressive lower back degenerative arthritis, spndylolysthesis, and osteophytosis, and usually encumbered with back-packed photo gear for the past 60 years. Putting on and getting off a two-strap back-pack was agony. the one-strap "sling-pack" has, for the past 15 years, been a blessing, particularly since I now ambulate with two forearm crutches!

Has anyone experienced or developed chronic lower back pain after extended use of a sling strap such as the Black Rapid and others? By extended use I mean two or three hours for most days over several weeks and/or months.

No, but I do a lot of exercises that strengthen my core.

I use that style of strap (a cheaper Chinese knock-off) and haven't had any problems in 5 plus years I've used it. The old Nikon neck strap was another story entirely -- that's why I changed strap styles.

I too have been a long time sufferer of lower back pain as I have 3 vertebrae in my lower back fused 3 years ago and I'm the proud owner of 2 bars and 8 titanium screws in my back. I also have 3 other vertebrae that I will have to deal with sometime down the road. So I'm very careful of what I carry and how much. I use the Optech sling and only carry my Canon 6D and whatever lens I'll be using at that particular time. I've also given up trying to carry more than one lens at a time as it's too much weight on my back. Not only has the sling been a lifesaver for me, I've had to learn to think ahead on what lens I'll be using. I hope you find something that will help you with your situation. I'm sold on Optech and what it does for me, and I guess you can say it's been a lifesaver.

I doubt it's the sling's fault. You should do a bunch of exercises to build up your stamina. Probably your stomach muscles the most. (Sit up's???) That should help your back the most.

The older I get the more my stomach gets weaker. Your back problem is of prime concern to my back also.

Well that's a valid point.
