Renown photographer David Gilkey and his translator were killed in Afghanistan today. The Afghan Army unit he was chronicling was attacked by enemy forces . What a shame and a waste. Even photographers are NOT immune from the senseless violence caused by the Islamic extremists plaguing the world.

Rest in Peace, David.

My heart bleeds for all the lives senselessly lost in that wild God forsaken hole called Afghanistan. Blame your dumb leaders for sending troops into the place.
You walked into a wild land that had been ruled by lawless tribesmen for 2000 years. You will leave shortly exactly as the Russians before you having changed nothing. All you have achieved is to stain the soil with fine boys blood and ensure the locals loathe the US.
A fine photographer now lost for nothing

I saw Mr. Gilkey's work in the Detroit Free Press - sad day for photography and mankind. Thanks for posting.

I agree completely. There really is nothing for us except to lose more fine young service people.

What about the majority of the people of Afghanistan who want nothing to do with the radical side of Islam? Do we just ignore them and allow them to be enslaved by a very small minority simply because they are willing to kill anyone that doesn't agree with them?

Yes. It's their problem.

Ghengis Kahn was smart enough to steer away form there on his conquest. They have never been conquered. Our leaders don't have any short or long term memory. Most recently, the Russians gave up after 10 years. Who in their right mind would think we can do any better. We need to GET THE HELL OUT of there.

Mr. Gilkey was a photographer and reporter for NPR, along with Zabihullah Tamanna his longtime associate and translator, and as such each did much valuable work for them. they were credited with accurate and unbiased reporting in the Helmand, which has always been a dangerous patch of Afganistan. Each will be missed and mourned by both their friends at NPR and all other correspondents in their profession. certainly sympathy goes out to each man's family.

How about they do their own killing? My son spent a year in that dung pile and fortunately managed to come back in one piece. If those Afghani's have a bone to pick with the radicals let them do their own dirty work. They will appreciate winning if they have to do the fighting.

Isn't that just what we heard in Vietnam. Those people lost 20x the people we did, and did way better after we left a decimated population and country behind.
