Just prchased the Sony A77(2wks) at 20plus megapixles (even at JPEG fine) eats up a lot of Ram! What would you Guys/Gals suggest! either laptop or desk

Welcome to UHH and the world of Sony Alphas. If you search this forum you will find several recommendations / discussions for external hard drives to store all those pix.
I'd be interested in how you like the A77. I use the earlier A55 and love it.

Absolutely Love it! having"graduated from the Nikon 5000 with the Nikkor 18-200mm lens I now use the Sony 18-250! getting the right brain to include all the options available in the A77 will take time/practice/time etc.but so much FUN! Thank You One and All!

Either. Your question implies that you are saving everything you shoot. DON'T! Unless you are the i in a million photographers who can justify doing so, it is hardly likely that everything you shoot is worth saving.
I think that if you are a bit more picky in what you save, the hard drive size in either type machine will matter a lot less.

I can read the sarcasm between the lines, but I risked stating the obvious for the simple reason that very many of the questions posted here make it plain that the obvious isn't always . . . , obvious.

Just saw a discount coupon for a portable 1.5 TB Seagate portable hard drive at Costco. $20 off. When I was in the store I believe they were $90 or $100 before discount. Seems like a lot of memory in a small package. Seagate is a recognized name although some computer whiz will have to say if they have a good reliability record.

I prefer a laptop just so I can take it with me and process on the go; especially if on vacation.
Just load it up with RAM and disk space.
Doesn't matter if it's Mac or Windows, but would matter more if you are happy with current software. If that isn't an issue then it would be good to have some experienced photo enthusiasts show you what they use and how they use it. You might search youtube and see if there are videos of people using Aperture (for the Mac) or Lightroom (for the Windows platform) just to see what you like.

Sorry! I am sorry you misunderstood my words! I appreciate any and everything that contributes to my enjoyment and understanding and sarcasm is not my style! Years ago I WAS teased about "holding on to just about everything I shot! But for what ever reason it just did not occur to me at this time(old age!?!) smile Again thank you! but I really want photoshop to fly! So answer the ? allready!sonrisa Thanking all in advance!

Hi gang, I 've read that there are issues with EF and studio lighting with the SLT's. Have you used an external flash unit on yours? I had thought about getting the 55 before the 77 came out, but opted for Nikon? I used a lot of Minolta and even Konica's. Being the guy who dared to shoot weddings with them...way back when only Canon and NIkon ruled the day for 35. Of course the Rollieflex was nice too.

Congratulations! I have been a Sony Digital camera user since the 707, followed by the 717, R-1, A-700 and now (since released) the A-77. Great camera and loaded with many great features. Do you have any lenses? Mine are the Tamron 11-17
WA; Sony 18-250 (my most-used "Go To" lens) Tokina 90mm Macro; and 70-300 Tamron tele-Macro. All these lenses highly recommended and perform beautifully.

Forgot to answer your question! My recommendation would be a fast dual processor under desk tower with tons of ram.
Also, get a big (24"+) high quality monitor (the Dells are good and priced quite low). Make sure the video card can handle the images because the files are BIG! Suggest at least a 1 terabyte drive and also suggest a RAID array so you will not lose any of your images in a HD crash. It does happen. I use Paint Shop Pro X-4, which does everything PShop does. Hope you don't mind my very opinionated suggestions. Been doing this stuff for more than 45 years and should have learned something by now.
