We visit a few ancient structures just off center in the old city: the massive 5th century Ark Fortress, the adjacent 17th century Bolo Hauz Mosque with its wooden pillars, the enchanting 9th century Samanid Mausoleum and the whimsical Char Minar gate house (1807).

Hi rund4fittness - I am pleased you liked the pictures, particularly this ceiling shot. I am a bit in a quandry about that one: very often on the silk road, such ceiling panels have the center recessed, sometimes this turns it into a "black hole" - on this one there is no black hole and when I blow up the image after downloading (CTRL and +), it appears to me that this is also the case and that there is a small contraption like a red light bulb or something in there - in most other cases this is very obvious, but here, I am left to scratching my head!
BTW - I see that you are from Puget Sound WA - so we are really distant neighbors with me up in Ferndale WA!
Have a great weekend
Joe
