I was lucky enough here in Amarillo to find a couple of very knowledgeable guys in the photo department of our normally subpar Best Buy. But they knew their stuff and even checked on their smartphones to find this:

I am thrilled it works and grateful I am old enough to know the basic skills because, indeed, these are fully manual lenses on the D5300. The only things I can set are the shutter speed and ASA. Still, the old lenses are superb. With the Telesor 85-210mm MD mount zoom and a 2X converter, I can function at the equivalent of a 255-630mm DX lens.

I was in my backyard when I spotted a contrail and shot the plane. When I looked at the frame on the computer, the pilot was waving at me (just kidding). I could discern whether the jet engines were wing- or rear fuselage-mounted.

I am still learning the Nikon and relearning the old skills and rules, but so far, so good.

George here, a semi-retired journalist who mostly wrote professionally, although did shoot occasionally. But, also a photo hobbyist since my first SLR, a Minolta SRT-101 in 1970. Meandered through the digital world using an Olympus E-510 for my own newspaper. Then traded it for a Canon G15, which my wife and I love. Took it to Europe in 2013 and got great photos.

I recently found I could adapt my old Minolta lenses to a Nikon D5300 so I am now thrilled and motivated to be more active in photography.

Live in the Texas Panhandle, where it’s so flat you can watch your dog run away for two weeks. Love trains, airplanes (but don’t care about cars) sailboats and landscapes.

Thanks for this forum.

You may also be interested to know that Minolta was sold to Konica, becoming Konica-Minolta. Sony then bought Konica Minolta, thereby making many original Minolta Mount lenses mount to certain Sony cameras without an adaptor, and the rest with a simple adaptor.

A much more likely fit than on any Nikon body. Sony is the new MINOLTA! FWIW!

Welcome! What the trick of old Minolta lenses on Nikon (D90). I used a Minolta SRT101 from 1973 to 2004 and then got my dad's nikons after he died. I still have 1 srt101 ( my daughter now has my second one) and several nice lenses and would like to use them.

From one hogger to another with a G-15 welcome. I love the fact that I can get some great shots (using raw) from such a small camera. It is a great supplement to my canon DSLRs. Looking forward to your photos of that dog two miles away!

Thanks. Yes. I looked at the Sony line, but it was expensive and the D5300 with a lens was on sale for a great price. And a lot of my friends shoot Nikons and are willing to lend lenses.
