Another UNESCO World Heritage Site (listed as "Historic Center of Bukhara") with about 140 architectural monuments, Bukhara's history stretches back millennia. It was famous as a center of trade, scholarship, culture and religion, and also had a very large Jewish population which dwindled to a few hold-outs.

In this segment we take a brief look at our quaint B&B hotel with typical local decorations followed by a stroll through the ancient quarters of the town.

Thanks Carolina - I am pleased that you enjoyed the pictures and the info and it most definitely is a very colorful part of the world when it comes to architecture, products and people - if only the landscape would life up to it!

Curious, would the B&B be the equivalent of our Comfort Suites or Ritz-Carlton by their lodging standards? (It may be time for me to move up from the chain hotels in future travel.) Beautifully rendered and shared, Joe!

Thank you jaymatt - and yes, I thought that stairway was unusual, and I particularly also liked the shadow patterns of the stairs on the wall!

Well, I have to bare my ignorance: Not sure what the Comfort Suites are, I do know the Ritz-Carltons from my previous (and long ago) corporate life, but I am definitely in a different phase of my life now. The Sacha & Son B&B in Bukhara is definitely a curiosity among all the thousands of hotel stays I have experienced. It is actually located in an old Jewish merchant's house of the 16th century, very quaint, lavishly decorated with local art. Not really a "high class" abode, but it gets rave reviews and I personally am very pleased that our tour group put us in this place in Bukhara (maybe it helped that our guide for the all of the 'Stans was from Bukhara, actually used to work in this place as a young lad, and now owns a smaller but apparently similar place also in Bukhara) - all the other places we stayed in were more mundane places, maybe more comfortable but with much less history and authentic local ambience. Google it if you are interested to find out more about it!

Hi Shang - Thank you for your comments and that you are staying on to view, there will be another dozen or so posting over the next week or so.

The starting point of our trip was in Almaty/Kazakhstan, we then visited Kyrgyzstan, Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, where the tour ended in Ashgabad. I then participated in a tour extension to Iran and the final tour ended after 4 weeks in Tehran.

I already posted the first part of pictures of Kazakhstan/Kyrgyzstan and Tadjikistan last August, you can see these by clicking on my profile and then clicking on my topics created. I was not quite as organized when I posted those series, so they are not numbered, but since I have not really posted much on UHH, they should be easy to locate.

Actually, if you are interested for more details, then you can visit my website, also published under my profile, click on the Chronological tab and you will see the top 6 albums covering the different country segments of this trip - and I have just recently created and uploaded a series of maps which should make the trip more understandable.

Have fun
Joe

Thank you so much for staying on and keeping up with me - and enjoying the process. This really is quite an extraordinary part of the world, known by very few but so interesting!
