The report only shows the ignorance of the reporter. And perhaps the general lack of understanding in the population of variation.
There is no "trend" from one data point.
Such single point data is meaningless, as are the explanations that accompany them. It is like the daily report of why the Dow went up or down 20 points. Hogwash.
The author would have to tell us the variation in the statistic to have a clue if the data point is likely or rare. It would have to be relatively rare to justify a search for a cause. Potential causes need statistical tests of significance.

It's those dang CEO's and corporate greed causing all the current issues. Let's dismantle all the US corporations, let them join their friends in China and Mexico. That will teach them a lesson. Can't wait to sign up for all the government hand out programs. OOPS, who is going to fund the government with tax revenue? Maybe we should ask them to return provided they hand over all their profits. I knew I could figure this out.....

I think we will find that if the data is available by demographics that the increase is greater among women. This would not surprise me since women are not only becoming a greater (majority) portion of our population, but they have spent the last 25 years joining our male world of alcoholism, drugs, dangerous activity, and high, high stress occupations and lives.
