Okay so I know I'm probably flooding the message board with a question/topic a day but I am just really interested/fascinated by this new world, and I am looking to make a pretty big purchase.

My set up currently stands at: D3100, 18-55mm DX lens, a 55-200mm DX lens, and a 35mm f/1.8 prime.

I really like my two zoom lenses, and Ken Rockwell gives their optics really good reviews. I take care of my equipment so I'm not as worried about build quality...I guess ultimately I am wondering what will improve the quality of my pictures the most...

I am really interested in a D7000 body, but they say glass is what makes the difference - not the body.

I am also really interested in the 10-24mm wide angle, but i'm not sure that it'd be worht the 900 for the nikkor lens.

Lastly - I am wondering if I should just get one of the top notch Nikon lenses, and have a small range, but higher quality. One examples of this would be the 24-70 or 24-120mm.

Any suggestions? Will a new kit lens on a D7000 look better than a top notch lens on a D3100?

Generally, when someone asks "what will improve the quality of my pictures the most...", the answer lies in process and procedure rather than equipment. Most of your infquiry, however, implies that your problem is with hardware.

I suspect that, like most of us from time to time, you are seeking a rationale for buying a new toy. If so, have at it. If not, maybe you could be more specific as to what you think requires improvement.

Well I know that most of the "goodness" of my photography willl be judged off my composition, subject, focus, etc... So yes, you are correct in saying that I was seeking justification for a new toy haha. I made my decision and bought my 10-24mm Nikkor yesterday haha.. woops!

Hi Stef!
There were already 2 pages on this thread when I read your question, so I didn't want to reply until I read both pages.
I agree with your choice for two reasons: Your new lens will broaden the scope of your photographic abilities, and it's your first top quality lens (now you can upgrade your other 2 casually, as you go along).
The camera body upgrade should probably be the last, but after you get your new lens in a few days, you can pretty much do it any way you want! I know you're going to have fun, but that's my advise anyway: Have Fun!

Thank you! I plan on it. :) I'm thinking of selling the 18-55, but i'm not sure if it's worth it... it's not like I'd get much, and it is nice to have for walk around...

There are some great full-frame f1.8 primes around that are well priced (85mm F1.8, 50mm F1.8, 28mm F1.8). Pick them up as you can, and if you eventually jump to full frame, you won't have to worry about having to buy new lenses.

In the mean time, they are wonderful lenses that will serve you well, (and in my experience, shooting primes makes me more creative than when I am shooting zooms.)

I recently rented a Nikkor 28-70mm lens for a weekend.
It's a great lens, very fast autofocus, etc. but I've gotten over
lusting for it.

It's very heavy for me to carry around all day. I'll stick with my
Nikkor 50mm.
