I think you've done an excellent job of staging in the first shot. However, I agree that the lighting is better in the second shot. Good work.

I like the first one a lot. And have to agree with the comments that light is better on the second. But I like the first more, and for my taste I wish the crop would give more space to the left of the strawberry plate

I have trouble with the cooking but not with the eating, it wouldn't have lasted long enough for a still life!
Nice shots though, might I suggest for future shots be a little more careful with the composition and/or cropping. A bit more background around the coffee cup and a lot more on the other side to show the strawberry dish in full would add a lot to these very likeable shots. Once you've completed shot 1 turn the cake stand around to show the 'missing' slice.
Just nit picking really, but seeing this and not being able to taste it I felt I just had to find something to fault.

Love the second one....
In my opinion in your first photo which would have made it my favorite, I would have had the cake showing the missing slice, the way it is to me it's like wow where did the slice on the plate come from......just my opinion, for what it's worth.....Tom....
