I understand that on 0527 we are going to have a solar eclipse. Does anyone know what time in Calif. it will occur? Can anyone give me any tips on how to photograph this? I know we are not suppose to look directly at the sun. I am concerned with the more technical aspects. Thanks!

On Sunday May 20th, almost everywhere West of the Mississippi, the US will experience an annular, or partial solar eclipse:

Several nice maps, with time tables:

We are having an total "annular" solar eclipse that will be visible in northern California, but not on 5/27.... it will be on 5/20 and will begin around 5:30ish in the evening.

The "annular" means that the moon will be too small to totally cover the sun, so when the moon is fully within the sun, there will be a ring of sun showing around the edge of the moon. Call it a ring of fire.

I've attached a map showing where the path passes through California. The red center line is the optimum location, giving a perfect ring of fire. The blue lines are the edge of where the "total" eclipse will be visible. Outside the blue lines will only experience a partial eclipse where the disc of the moon does not totally pass over the disc of the sun.

I've also included a shot of an annular eclipse (not my photo) and a shot of a total eclipse (where the moon is big enough to cover the sun) that I took in Egypt in March 2006.

Plan now to get your solar viewing products. They are usually not sold locally and take time to get shipped. If you happen to be near Chico, we (the local community observatory) are selling solar glasses beginning May 17th for $3.50 each.

Thanks for the great information and setting me correct on the date. I am in Sacramento so I am not sure from your map how optimal that will be. Kind of funny I use to live in Redding and north of there seems to be the optimal viewing. I wonder how many people will be at the Sundial Bridge for this event. Any tips on photographing this. Great pics. Thanks for sharing. Thanks!

I was fortunate to go to Hawaii in 1991 for a total eclipse. First thing I was told unless you have a super lens, it hard to get a great picture. Also 4 different exposures will give you 4 totally different images. By the way. On a "total" eclipse you can look at it for a few minutes. We used un-develope slide film to look at the partial. Good luck.

I did not get any of this info soon enough to do anything about it from NE Orgon. Sometimes when these wondrous events happen we are covered with clouds, but I think this time I may have had half chance to glimpse it. mlm
