Kenko magnifier advice?

I bought a beautiful piece of glass--L 70-300mm. I wanted the extra focal length, since I take a lot of nature shots. However for some inexplicable reason (at least to me) Canon extenders don't work with that lens. I can't get a truly sharp shot with the Kenko extender though. Any advice? I have been lazy and not used a tripod (wouldn't be too practical in-the-field anyway, and I am now blessed with a surprisingly steady hand). I have had image stabilizer
on Mode 1 when using it. I have tried it in sunlight and nighttime. For the former the loss of F-stop wasn't an issue.

Thanks!

An extender will change your field of view to that of a longer focal length. The major downside is that it will also exaggerate any flaws in the lens. A 1.4 will be much sharper than a 2X. If you are shooting at small apertures you may also run into diffraction. The only lens I have ever been happy with using a 2X is the 70-200 II. If you are not using a 1 series body you will also loose the use of auto focus. It may auto focus with a non reporting extender but, it will be very inaccurate.

Thanks! I am using a L lens and a 5Dii body, but... Technically the autofocus works with the extender but it is slower than slow and can't seem to figure out what to focus upon-and I am not talking about tiny things, like to edge vs the center of a flower, but about big things, like the house I am aiming at... I am hoping some of you have advice, or else the thing is basically going to attain the status of a paperweight.

Thanks for taking time to reply!

I have the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS. I have no experience with Kenko, but I do have a Canon 2X expander. So far it has worked great on any lens on which it fits.

Which Kenko do you have? The Kenko Pro Plus 1.4x is of very high quality. Their lesser ones are not so great. Also if it will not auto focus with the lens, tape the 3 isolated pins to the right and it should auto focus. I get excellent results with it.

Thanks for asking, and it is encouraging that you get excellent results! I have the C-AF 2X Teleplus Pro 300. Should that yield high-end results? Especially when coupled with a Canon L lens?

Any tips for excellent results? IS off or on? Tripod? IS off when using tripod? Boost sharpness in image modes on camera?

Again, thanks for replies!

I have never heard of a 2X of any brand giving results equal to the image quality of a 1.4. As for the answers to your other questions the TC does not affect them. The Kenko Pro Plus 300 is what I have but it is a 1.4. I had a Canon 2x but sold it due to poor image quality.

A-ha! That is very helpful. Maybe my "problem" is the 2X magnification.

Thanks!
