Viewing image in two different software programs?

Why is it that when I view one of my scanned negative images in Irfanview, it looks fine, even when enlarged. But when I view the same image in PhotoShop, even at 25%, it is extremely pixelated? The image is a 2000x300 resolution scan from a Portra 400 negative.

Have you tried printing the enlarged image from both Irfanview (what is?) and from Photoshop to see what you get?
Is PS able to read the scanned image? Or is this scanner a 'new' device not yet covered by PS? After trying to print the output from both sources, I would suggest calling Adobe Tech Support as a starting point.

at what resolution did you save the irfanview image?

I always save my Jpeg's at maximum quality. As little or no compression as possible.

I use IRFan as a scan tool and a quick image sort and discard & resize tool. I edit in PSE. I haven't noticed this problem, I have noticed that color renditions and prints vary and while IRFan will open NEF files it appears to ignore the *.xmp files. With my set up Irfan brings up the scanners interface when I can set dots/inch color/B&W, and apply some low level filters. The scanned image then pops up in IRfan where I may straighten and crop. Then save in desired file format, pdf, or a large number of other image types. I will experiment to see if I can duplicate your problem.
