Does anyone take pics of food? Happens to be a hobby of mine, eating...
I also enjoy food pics...

Only a few so far and no where near as good as yours. However I am studying food styling. My daughter-in-law is a gourmet cook and she and I plan to do a cookbook one day. She cooks, I shoot then we all enjoy.......
Stuffed peppers (neds more garnishes)
Best ingredients
Italian Sausage, peppers, tomatoes over whole wheat pasta with Asiago Cheese
Some pretty nice photos here. Food photography is difficult to do well. You both have made some pretty tasteful attempts here. Couldn't resist. I wish you all the best. I have tried some with some ribs from my smoker once to put on a web site for smoking meats. They got the point across, but nothing special.
They all look delish to me! But as a pic, I really like #2. I also thought about food styling. My daughter is a pastry chef and I would love to shoot some of her creations, cept she's in NY. ;(

I think it really does take a special eye...seems different than most photography...I haven't been able to peg what it is though.
OK, maybe I am not enough of picture taker. When it comes to food my first thought is to eat and the 12th thought is maybe I should have taken a picture of it before I ate it all. lol

LOL when I'm cooking and about to serve I yell WAIT!!! I gotta get a picture first...... usually I don't take the time to Fancy the place setting up.....but am working on that. And I do agree, #2 has the best contrast of colors with the black background. I'm slowly aquiring a collection of twin size flat sheets to use as backgrounds.... The black works good...

You're about a half an F-stop underexposed on these shots. Very close, but noticeable. You can dial in an extra half stop of exposure compensation and see if that helps. I posted screen shots of the histogram I work with to adjust levels. I hope you can see the pointer on the bottom right of the histogram has a long way to go before it hits the bell curve. This shows you need a boost in highlights. The second shot shows the adjustment I made and the difference in the curve and photo. You develop an eye for exposure after years of staring at curves.
Exhibit A
Exhibit B

One tip, try to shoot it from above.... I usually stand on a chair or a small step ladder...
Like most of the best photography, it's mainly lighting and also composition. You have to take it at just the right angle to get the right feel, and lighting is SUPER important. I've read some articles about it, but haven't really tried to do much. It could be fun though.

Very true and after reading a couple books on the subject, I know why the food never looks the same when we buy it as it does in the ads....a lot of the food photos are NOT edible when they are done. Did you know that motor oil makes great looking syrup.... and for burgers sometimes the actually glue individual sesame seeds on a perfect bun. Truth in Advertising lol

Yupper...I just like to "dive in" and get a little closer...kind of like taste-testing as I get the shot! <Laf'n>
DIVE IN!!!
Yum Robin!
Bob, you might just be my hero, I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with these!
DB, I didn't know that about the motor oil, but I did know there are a lot of strange little tricks..
I think it's more challenging than people think. At least it is for me! :)
