I need to know if and how a photo file can be password protected. The reason I need to know is to keep a file of photos I took for a friend that I don't want seen by anyone but me. The young lady ask me to take some nude photos of her showing her 8 month pregnant body. I told her I would take them if it was OK with her husband. We ask him and he said he appreciated respecting his opinion. He said it was fine with him and he was in many of the photos I took. Both were very happy with the results. This couple are very good friends of my wife and I and I wanted all involved to feel OK with it. These photos are on my computer and I want to be sure no one will be able to look at them but me with out my permission. I am not great with computers and have not been able to find a way to do this. I am sure there is someone on out form that can tell me how. Please keep it simple so my old brain will be able to understand.

Maybe move them to a thumb drive then hide the thumb drive? Or ZIP them & PW the ZIP file.

Good luck.

That's what I would recommend too.

You can do what twowindsbear says, or you could simply hide the folder that they are in. If that option sounds appealing to you then respond to this and I'll tell you how. Keep in mind, someone with a little more than above average computing experience can unhide that folder. But they would have to know to look for hidden folders.

Why keep them? Delete and be done with the pics, give the couple the files

Yup, my solution too. Just remember where you hide the thumb drive.
Because there is so much to remember when it comes to computers, I have made a document on my Palm T|X that contains all my passwords, locations, etc. for various accounts, folders, "things", and protected that document with one password. While I do remember many password, I really have to remember only the one for this document and I can always look up the other things.

You could use a freeware utility like "7zip" and password protect the archive.

There are several PC and Android based applications to do this. One is called Gallery Lock. You download and install the software and then stow the image files away so only you know how to view them.

A simpler way to do this with a windows PC is create a new file type and change the names of the image file to this new file type. Since windows uses file types to know what to use to open them, if you assign your own type, when someone unauthorized tries to open them, nothing happens.

I'd either go with the Gallery Lock application or like everyone else has suggested, copy the image files to a thumb drive or SD card and delete the ones on the PC. You may also use encryption software that scrambles the files and requires a key to decipher them.

This type of software is also readily available in the 'net.

Unless you have permission and plan on using them, copy them to two thumb drives. Give them both to the model and delete from your computer.

What system are you using, PC or MAC. (can't help if it's on a MAC) even with a thumb drive (which I think has a better chance of getting into the wrong hands should you misplace it) on a PC right off the top I would set the attributes of the folder they reside in to HIDDEN, and if the computer is used by several others, (as you imply) remove any permissions to that folder via sharing options (do this before hiding). There are other more secure methods but if you need to go that far, I would start looking at who's using the computer...

Zip them down using WinZip or Win7 and password protect the zip file. Sort of double protection.

I think you should post them and then we can tell you what type of encryption is required

There are several ways you can do this. Zip7 would be a good choice. Not that it will compress the files much, as jpg files are already compressed. It offers encryption and password protection. Another is PGP which is available for LInux machines, but I'm not sure about windoze or mac. Both are free.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. Sorry about not getting back sooner to look over the replies to my question. One ask about what computer I was using and I forgot to tell everyone. It is a Windows 7 system. I will check out all the suggestions and feel that I now can protect the photos. The reason I don't want to delete them is that there have already been several times that they have contacted me for more after looking at the disc that I gave them and it is much more easier and faster for me if I have them readily available on my computer. Thanks again for the help.
