What does it do and is it any good. It has a 2011 copyright year on the CD.

View NX 2 was Nikon's raw converter that came free with Nikon cameras and was downloadable (It may still be available as a download)

It provided a way to view & convert Nikon NEF raw files as well as view and edit the raws and JPG images.

It was not a bad program, but not real powerful.

The replacements are View NX-I & Capture NX-D - all free for downloading from Nikon.

If you shoot raw, it will take the Nikon raw files and apply the settings from the camera to output a JPG just like the camera would.

Actually, if you use a Nikon and shoot fairly close to what you see, it is excellent, quick and easy. I only have to go into Elements for something special or if I screwed up. It is a little quirky sometimes, but nothing major like loosing photos.

I use it most of the time. I rarely need to use Photoshop CC which I have.

I use the Transfer function in ViewNX2 to transfer files from my memory card reader to my computer. It creates a new folder for you when it transfers files and numbers them sequentially. I haven't downloaded View NX-I yet which is its replacement. I'll have to do that soon. I've been using Capture NX-2 for editing but just downloaded Capture NX-D for my D500 files.

View NX 2 was the free software (Simple RAW converter, Photo editor and cataloging files) packaged with many older Nikon cameras
It is an old outdated (no longer supported) piece of software and I would not bother with it.

Capture NX 2 is Nikon's old photo editor.
It allows for fairly extensive photo editing and I think you can still purchase it but it doesn't support the NEF files of the latest Nikon cameras

ViewNX-i now has superseded ViewNX2
Both apps share roughly the same functionality and features.
ViewNX-i can be download for free from the Nikon website, is frequently updated by Nikon and therefore always works with all past and current Nikon cameras.

Capture NX-D is another free (and frequently updated) download from the Nikon website.
NX-D is Nikon's RAW editor and allows for more in-depth and batch editing of Nikon RAW (NEF) files.
One nice feature (that was carried over from CaptureNX2) is that it lets you manipulate many of the pre-sets of the camera on your PC after the picture was taken.
In addition it let's you automatically apply lens profiles (i.e. distortion control, chromatic aberrations) of most Nikon lenses.

I don't like View NX-I so I keep the latest version of View NX-2 to use.

Nikon's proprietary post processing program. Very good but limited.

NX2 is not compatible with Android files. NX2 is for Nikon's only.

As others have said, View NX is Nikon's FREE Raw converter. It is downloadable and is still being updated by Nikon. For what it is and the price, it is a pretty good start. I have it and keep it updated on all of my computers but have several others that are my go to programs. I still keep View NX and keep it updated as an "additional" tool. I also have Nikon Capture NX2 (a very good program that has since been replaced because NX sold to Google) and Nikon Capture NXD which Nikon sold for a fee (the Nikon program that replaced Capture NX2 when NIC sold) which is free and pretty good but not nearly as powerful as some others, Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 ( a very good USB tethered complete control of your camera from your computer with live image on the computer screen etc. and is a program you can purchase from Nikon). In addition, I have Adobe Lightroom / Photoshop (I initially bought the CD but now have the Cloud) and several other programs that I almost never use since I got Lightroom / Photoshop. I use many programs in order to determine and take advantage of strengths and avoid weaknesses of each but tend to rely on Adobe. The Nikon offerings of View NX and Capture NXD which are free programs are a very good start for entry level editing and adjustment and I highly recommend them as that. But, as I stated, you need to learn what you can do easily in each (including Adobe) and use each to that advantage.

It is a RAW converter / photo editor application that was provided with Nikon cameras. It used a NIK 'engine' for editing, which was quite good. NIK was eventually purchased by Google. So, I'm not sure of the relationship with NIkon after that purchase. It seems to me that it was similar to LR in some respects to editing. Though it did not, to my recollection, do cataloging.

I still use it to transfer files from card to camera.

Nikon still supports it (up to a point) and have theoretically replaced it with Nikon DX2 as their free editor. I have found that Nikon DX2 is not nearly as good as View NX2 but I HIGHLY recommend downloading and installing both. ( Personally, I am a believer that you can never have too many options, even if you don't use them all. Drive space is fairly inexpensive). I generally rely on Lightroom / Photoshop but there are times when I will go (especially to Capture NX2) other programs for a specific fix that I haven't learned how to do in LR/PS yet. (Yes, I know I could sit down and learn it in those, but I already know the others and usually am trying to meet a deadline). As with many carpenters, mechanics, etc., you can never have too many tools as long as you understand the strengths and weaknesses of each.

That is not accurate. It will process Canon JPEGS. I do it on a regular basis.

I agree. the initial version was not much to look at.
Have you looked at the latest version yet?
They added basic editing now similar to ViewNX2 and it also includes a video editor..
It is much faster than ViewNX2.
I use it now to pre-select picture files (decide what I want to keep) after a day of shooting.
