Can anyone help me identify this fellow, a first time visitor to my backyard fountain?
Looks like a young Starling.

I haven't a clue, Ken - but think you did a great job capturing it. There are Grackles, Cowbirds, Starlings, Red-winged blackbirds and the only one I can ID is a mature Red-wing.
They will take over and run all the other birds off and tear up their nests. be advised a starling.

yes its a European Starling. They were introduced to North America in 1890/91 in New York's Central park to celebrate a play by Shakespeare!

We have a few of these guys around - Starling.
Terrible birds. They are a pest. They evicted wood peckers from my front yard two years in a row and killed the female.
They also raid my Purple Martin house and push the chicks out of the nest.
I have a repeating Starling trap set up on my property. Sometimes catch three a day.
You do not want to know whats happens then.

It is an adult European Starling.
Your hands will stink to high heaven for days from the oil in their feathers if you ever handle one and your ears will hurt from their incessant cackling. They congregate in huge noisy flocks in the Fall here in the North East and poop over everything. Not what you want to encourage at your feeder as they will take over and trash the place, not unlike members of some political partiesā
Yes they stink up hour hands and can peck like hell when you catch them.
I don't know, but it sure is a nice shot!
