There has been a bit of discussion here about how camera makers don't do very well coming up with model names. Well, Canon got it right with their series of L lenses.

Nikon needs some L lenses. You mention a Canon L lens, and everyone knows what you're talking about - top quality glass. Obviously, Nikon has equally good glass, but it needs a simple identifier. There are twenty-five other letters to choose from, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Nikon could appoint a committee, have monthly meetings, and go on trips to do research. Within a few years they should be able to narrow down the selection to just a couple of dozen possible names. Then I will know what to wish I was able to afford.

Just takes a little research. Start with the 3 zooms, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, all 2.8. Then the 300mm 2.8, and all the long telephotos. Fill in with some of the primes.

I believe they do: they have the Nano coating and "N" in a gold oval on the lens barrel. What Nikon doesn't have is a large marketing department.

Guess it goes along with making almost* all their lenses black. Less conspicuous.

Here is a link to Nikon's nano coated lenses. All of the lenses I listed previously are nano coated. I would take these lenses over "L" lenses, and I would not limit my list of top of the line fine Nikon glass to the list.

I'll be glad to go on the trips to do research. I would NOT have a problem with that!

It took only a Nano second?

How's this?
Nikkor "E" series.

So whats the "E" for?
E as in expensive, extraordinary?

they do have a name for excelant quality lenses its called nikor!!! as in all of them!!!!!! its like the name mercedes, if it has the three point star on the hood, you can automaticaly assume its of the highest quality. Us nikonians are secure enough with our equipment that we don't need mamby pamby white lenses or red trim or special letters to make us feel good. We have our photos to do that. lol

I've wanted to say that! If it were only true! I owned a 43-86 that was a great soft-focus lens...only I don't think Nikon designed it that way on purpose.

Thank God this isn't a gun forum.
Nothing worse then a 9mm vs. 45 ACP, or Glock vs. S&W debate.

BTW, I'll take .45 and S&W over 9mm and Glock. :-P
