I am little confused are you asking if the Canon lens will work on the D500? I can tell you there not interchangeable at all, lens mounts is the issue!

Nikon and Canon have incompatible lens mounts. There may be an adapter you can use.

You have to purchase a Sigma lens specifically for the Canon mount, Nikon mount, Sony, Pentax, etc. If you want to purchase only one lens, and want to use it on a different name brand body, you need a lens adapter.

I bought the Sigma 18-300 DX format lens a while ago and it is my first choice for most situations. It's lighter and seems to pass more light than my Nikon 70-300 ED lens. That one, due to the crop sensor, sort of acts like a 105-450 lens on the D5000 (which I used to have) and the D5300 I now have. There is some pincushion distortion at 18 mm, other than that I'm happy.
