Help with Layers in PSE 14, Please!

Several years ago, I edited a photo of my daughter-in-law. I converted the picture selected into a black and white and placed it over the original picture. Using my Wacom Bamboo, I went over her flowers to bring that color into the B & W photo. I'm trying to do the same thing again, but I'm hitting the proverbial stone wall! I have searched the Adobe Help manual but I'm getting nowhere. Can someone tell me, in simple to follow terms, how I can do this??

I am attaching the first photo so that you can see what I am trying to do again.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer.

first: make a duplicate layer
then convert the top layer to B&W
then erase the part you want the color to show thru.

In simple terms-- make a duplicate layer. Convert it to black and white (lots of ways to do so). Make a mask. Use a black brush at 100 percent opacity to go over the area you want to see color. Merge your layers. Done.
