Evidently there are at least 2 versions of LR6 ... LR6 ... LR6.
This post is for those folks who OWN LR6 LR6 LR6 and haven't tried HDR because they thought it would not work.
I have LR 6. Not LR CC6; I bought it, not renting it. The two are very similar but not the same. I have seen two videos that state the PHOTO MERGE > HDR will not work - nothing will happen. Anthony Morganti's Episode 17 for instance. His videos are very well made and I have found them to be accurate and easy to follow. I AM NOT faulting him in any way. Follow his instructions and see if your version actually works. THAT'S ALL I am saying. I repeated LR6 so as to avoid people writing in about how it works in LR CC6 (or maybe it doesn't) ... I DON'T CARE - This post is dealing with LR6 only. If it helps with other versions; you're welcome ;-)
I have LR6 and I've never had HDR merge not work.

Good for you. The note was for those people who may have been under the impression that HDR
did not work. Perhaps there are "Early" and "Later" versions of LR6.
Did you look at the video I specifically mentioned?

All I can find is "Learn Lightroom 5" and "Lightroom Quick Tips". In neither of these series is episode 17 about HDR.
UPDATE to my original posting.
I have been looking around, paying MORE attention to Anthony Morganti's video. He is using LR CC and makes no distinction between LR6 and CC. This is interesting, because I have a You-Tube video using LR CC (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x_hJF6YJdg ) that shows the HDR option to be working.
OK, now it's getting a little confusing. I thought I would be giving out some useful information and I have discovered there appears to be conflicting informational videos. SO ..... don't necessarily believe the video you are using; try it for yourself on your version of LR.
The only difference (that I know of) between LRCC and LR6 is that LR6 doesn't have a De-Haze slider (but you can get pre-sets that access LR's de-haze software which is in LR6 but can't be accessed because of the lack of a slider).

If LR 6 is 'buyable' who sells it, OWC? When did it come out - about the time of Photoshop CS6?

LR 6 has updates available just like LR CC. I use BOTH versions as I need three total copies and I really don't have any issues. I will attempt an HDR in LR 6 and see if there is any difference and report back. Please note that my copy of LR 6 was very recently updated!

I Googled just the name and got what I described. I found the video and tried doing what he described (for the original and
two copies, one at +1 and one at -1) and I got a successful merge.

EXACTLY! Even though in the video he says nothing will happen. And that is why I posted the original note.

Very recently updated ....
I have LR6.0 , Would you please tell me where to get any available updates. I cannot find them on the Adobe site. LR6 ... not LR CC
I am using a MAC OS system 10.11.4 (OS X El Capitan). I attempted a download (which was for LR6.5); I got an error msg U44M2P7 and I'm not alone in getting this error code. I have been doing a lot of searching and believe that anything above Adobe LR6.1 is not supported on my OS.
If there is anyone out there who has a MAC and has ACTUALLY updated LR6 ... please let me know.

Go to HELP>Updates. Clicking on Updates will initiate a search. The chances are that Lightroom checks for updates automatically.

That brings you to an update for LR CC .... which I don't have.
