I don't even pretend to be an expert photographer but, I don't understand all the talk about weight when folks talk about camera & lens weight.
My wife & I each have a Sony a99 with a Tamron 28-300mm lens.

We have together gone to:
Hawaii.
The Caribbean Islands chain twice.
Costa Rica
Florida many, many, times.

On each trip we average around 3,000 pictures each.
Never have, at any time, have either of us expressed a gripe about camera weight.
A salesman at Best Buy mainly pushed the fact that the new Sony cameras were smaller & lighter then the older models.
I like the results that I get with my camera and not the weight. call me old & grumpy.
I'm 76 and my wife is 69 and cameras don't seem that heavy to us.

AND, you are apparently in GOOD health .......The A99 and Tamron are fairly light - for what they are - but there ARE many lighter solutions - but with lesser image quality. Carry them till you get tired !

I'm with you, I feel exactly like you, we're not talking about "schlepping around" a couple hundred pounds all day, but a tiny little camera!

Personally, I like the feel of a good-sized camera. Having said that, my 5D3 + battery grip + 70-200 f2.8L (and occasionally a flash) can get a bit tiring after a long shoot (~6 lbs) - feels a lot like my RB67😈

The fact that lightweight cameras aren't heavy is just another of life's mysteries.

What else were you carrying?

I agree...DSLR's and lenses aren't that heavy, but when you need to lug around other stuff, like a backpack, tripod, filters, food, water, shelter, clothes, and other staples for a long hike...every ounce and square inch of packable space is accounted for.

Hell, I'm 41 and a former Marine...and I choose to go with smaller gear...doesn't mean that either one of us is right or wrong. It's a personal preference.

hey, Charles and spouse,
good for you both. i'm 70 with the world's worst spine and i carry my hasselblad and 4x5 kit along with me over hill and dale. is there pain? yes. do i care? no. my photography is worth the inconvenience. i hope to be doing this (gods and goddesses willing) at your age.

I regularly carry a 4x5 view camera with lenses, film, filters etc. This also requires a sturdy tripod (Gitzo aluminum). In the event I'm not taking the 4x5, I'm taking a Hasselblad 500C with 4 lenses, again tripod, filters, etc. I also accompany these with a sapper's bag containing my Nikon D700, along with a number of accessories. I've never complained about weight. In fact, photography is an incentive to stay in good condition.

Now, I'm not talking about hiking 25 miles, but regularly will walk 5 or so totally during a day out with cameras.

You forgot to mention your little red wagon that you put it all in.

For me, worrying about the weight of my gear would be kind of like ordering a double cheeseburger and large fries and making it all right by ordering a Diet Coke! I could stand to lose 10 lbs and that is more of an issue for me then saving a few ounces with a smaller camera! If you can carry your gear comfortably for the kind of shooting you do, then that's all that matters, IMO.

No, I didn't. I don't use one of those. A friend of mine does, though.

This spring at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum I saw a man carrying a heavy camera case and a sturdy tripod trekking all over the trails. I saw him do a quick setup with a 4x5 view camera, take one shot of an old outbuilding, and pack up in under 10 minutes. Would love to see his photo.

Holy Crap!!!! Well, there's proof I don't use a red wagon. However, that is my Graphic II view camera and case. Well, it's inside the case.

I remember that particular outing. I went to The Boyce Thompson Arboretum and then on to Globe, Az.

Thanks for posting this CZcis. I'd have never had proof of my earlier statement.
