My family and I just got back to New York yesterday from a 10 day trip to Kauai, wish I was going back. I would suggest that you bring your 35-70 2.8 and your 70-200 with you. I primarily used my 24-70 mm, 2.8 the entire time, I did have my 70-200mm 2.8 with me, but only used it on a couple of occasions. One item I would strongly suggest you bring is a circular polarizing filter with you, the sun is very bright and creates a lot of reflections.

I have a couple of posts from that trip on here, "Paradise" and "Hawaii"

Have a safe trip, i know you will have a great time.

Aloha

From my travel experiences on cruises, I would bring all 3 if I were you. I think when the trip is over, you will be glad you did.

Enjoy! I envy you.

I recommend not bring the 70-200, to heavy to carry around all day on tours, etc. I used my 18-140 nikon lens and never looked back. Have a great cruise.

35-70 will be your lens of choice for 90% of your photography, IMO. However, the 70-200 could come in handy. Then you will be sorry that you don't have your 14-24. If I had to limit to two lenses, I would leave the 70-200.

If you had a 24-85 vr, you could probably get away with just one lens. Available for about $350 refurbed and it is extremely sharp with a f stop starting at 3.5 and ending at 4.5. It is light weight and sharp. With what the trip will cost, another $350 is not much to spend for what a lifetime of use. When my wife and I took an Alaskan cruise, she used a 18-70 on a D70 and carried a 70-300. Both light weigh and took care of all our needs. The 24-85 on FX is wider than than the 18-70 on DX so the wide side is pretty much covered. Since the 35-70 is not vr I would leave it behind. If you can afford about $550 I would suggest the 24-120 f4. A little heavier with a little longer range. I use the 24-85 vr on my D810 and am very happy with its performance. Hope this helps. Leon

70-200mm for sure, extra memory cards and battery. And don't put your camera strap over your shoulder only. They slip off your shoulder sometimes and your camera drops to the concrete. Not good.

Mahalo,

I just got back from Hawaii two weeks ago.

I say keep it simple because you really don't want to carry a lot of heavy camera gear unless its for work. Your D800 with the 14mm-24mm & 70mm-200mm is more than you need and it's heavy.

Even though I have the same camera equipment as you I don't take them with me when I'm traveling. I normally take 2 bodies, D4s & D800, 28mm-300mm, 16mm-35mm & 50mm. I leave the heavy lenses at home.

I attached a few images from Hawaii.

My son lives in Hawaii, I always take my Sony DCS-HX400V, light, cheap, and I never have missed a shot. You are thinking of taking too much equipment. Travel right, travel light. I own a ton on Nikon and Sony DSLR equipment, but when I travel, I only take one small camera. I am happy, my wife is happy, we enjoy ourselves more, and I have more time to enjoy my trip rather than to think which lens?, which lens? I concentrate on what is important, to enjoy myself. Try it, you may even like it.
