..... For far less money, one can buy an entry to mid level DSLR body with an APS-C sensor and stick on a sigma 18-300 lens. Would equal or better this new Sony in most situations ....
How does that math work. The RX10iii has a 600mm (equivalent) telephoto reach. How do you get from the Sigma's 300 to 600?

Jerry, I know you have an RX100iii that fits in your pocket. This thread is about the RX10iii with the huge lens. Do you have one of those too?

Yes, I realized my mistake after it was too late to make a correction.

Sony seems to be putting a lot of imaginative engineering into their cameras. Among their successes if offering models that appeal to smartphone photographers and videographers. At the same time, there are parts of their marketing department that seem to be devoid of imagination. They name models like RX100, RX10, AX100 and add suffixes with roman numerals. Change a numeral or drop a letter and you have an entirely different camera. Panasonic is not much better and even has a LX100.

Would those having this camera please post comments. The reviews seems mixed. The price seems high but it is less than others when purchasing a separate camera with a long zoom lens.

I plan to buy something by August for Yellowstone trip in mid September. I'm in no hurry. I like the all-in-one design but am considering the Panasonic GX8 or a Olympus Pen7 with the new 100-400 lens.

I'm also looking at the Sony 6300 but native lens in the higher zoom range seem limited.

I currently have a Nikon P900 and a Sony A57 with a Tamron 18-270 and a Tamron 90 Macro. I also carry a Olympus TG-3 for a pocket camera. i like the in camera 8 shot focus stacking and the 30 shot focus bracketing for macro work. The micro4/3th now have those features. Decisions, decisions.

The camera is getting great reviews. But keep in mind plastic gears go into this and many more cameras just like it. They are at best a three years and out camera, but then again, in three years you will be ready for the next advancement. The Ziess T* lens is a great one. 24-600, how can you beat that.

It's one thing to be ready for the next advancement, but another to be forced into it. IMHO, $1500.00 is way to much to pay for a camera that is likely to crap out after 3 years.

It is the same for many point and shoots.

On a crop sensor camera, for which this this lens was designed, it gives the equivalent on 450mm in most cases

True, but there is a big difference between having a $300.00 camera kick the bucket after 3 years than having a $1500.00 camera doing the same. IMHO, this new Sony does get awesome images and shows the potential of their 1" sensor. Perhaps they should come out with a MILC system based on that same sensor. Hopefully they will do a better job with it than Nikon did
