While in New Orleans we saw many what seemed to be homeless with their dogs & cats, etc.

At first, I thought,"where's the top of his head?" Then I realized that his head isn't important to the story of the photo--the book and dog are the story here. Nice work with the composition and the b&w presentation. Color would detract, I think.

You have not asked so if I'm out of line just say so. Just a fabulous capture and presentation Mr. Chinn. Nitpick dogs right eye catchlight..outer catchlight could be toned down slightly, upper left corner bright spot toned down. Neither is a big issue but on download stand out a bit more. Great perspective, composition, and impact.

This one shoots toward the top of the list, all genres included. Another one that I can't explain the "why" it touches me, just that it does. Also, the B&W seems done to perfection.

In all regards...impact, tech, and composition...well above the "mentions" ...definitely among the ribbons!

Thanks John !!! Yea, the crop is something I don't normally do but I have been experimenting with it after seeing other similarities and have kinda grown fond to it. You are correct though, the story interpretation is the book and dog.

The light is wonderful. The story is clear. The only thing I would have done, is not cut off his head and moved back and higher to that I could read his cardboard sign. Then I also see another crop/shot a bit tighter where only three elements are visible, head, book and dog and perhaps recomposed in such a matter for balance. There is a lot here. Nice technique, well done.

I keep coming back and look at it again. The dog's soulful gaze somewhere between bored and sad captivates and the man's expression strikes me a similar. A relaxed sadness, melancholy - they have each other, I hope someone else too.

Frank, you are not out of line at all. Sorry, I should have specified comments and critique welcomed. I will say your eye for critique is beyond me. I would have never seen the catchlight in the dog's eye. However, to me it is so minor that I'm not going to worry about it but good catch. I agree, the upper left corner needs some attention. Thanks for commenting and it is much appreciated.

Wonderful impact and "touching." Flawless. Some would have passed this by without notice. The fact that you really "see" people is an awesome thing..

Thanks Mark !!! Your comments are much appreciated. I value and respect your opinion, although the crop is something I'm still experimenting with. Right or wrong, its what I feel is appropriate at the time.

The story is not about the sign, (which reads "Anything is a Blessing") rather its about the dog, book and the person which seemed to be reading the book to the dog for a ... 'Story Time'.

I understand what you are saying in your comments but I fail to understand that in previous threads you have stressed about low angle shots and now that I have posted one you go the other way. When I saw the dog in the owners lap while he was reading the book, I did not want to work the scene to recompose for this shot or others for fear I would miss the moment that was captured. I do see the tighter crop you speak of which is a very good idea.

I'm sure you know, but I will say, most all of us here on UHH are very different on how we compose a shot. Some may be similar but they will be different. Having said that, I hope you can accept the fact that most images are not going to be the way you would have done them. Don't get me wrong, for I am saying this in a meaningful and a respectful way. Words, when written don't have tone so things can very easily be misinterpreted. So don't think your comments and opinion goes without being noted. All comments mean a lot to me, because I learn from it one way or another. Thanks again for your respectful comments.
