RANT ON: I normally don't say a whole lot. However, in the short time I have been here on UHH I have noticed a lot of photographers posting blurry, OOF shots and getting replies like the title of this thread. Why? If an experienced photographer wants to help an inexperienced photographer: Tell the truth. It is of no value to feed incorrect info and have someone think they are doing well and instead forming bad habits. RANT OFF ;)

WOW - I guess I must have missed those posts & comments. I'll have to pay closer attention - new glasses or even clean my screen.

umm there is this style called soft focus! not every photo has got to be sharp down to the subatomic level, so sharp you can cut a diamond with it. I think this over obsession with tack sharp realistic photos borders on OCD. also there is another thread here that is going on 7 pages long about how mean and supercrtical people have been in critiquing his angel photograph. so are we too nice or too mean. I choose to see hhow a newbie responds to critque before offering any. I can usually find something positive to say, before sugesting changes. other people are more blunt.

I am well aware of "soft focus". Have been shooting Weddings and engagements for the last 15 years and have shot many of them. Even have a lens dedicated to just that. I am not saying beat every one up but, just be honest! A photo of a small animal that shows no detail, blurry eyes etc is not a "soft focus", it is "out of focus". (just one example) :) Do I sometimes shoot crap? You bet I do and when someone points it out and tells me where I went wrong I do not get upset. I learn!

Some folks are more tactful in their critiques some less. some more plain spoken, some less so.
From my stand point if an image lacks some element I state such in a maannor that instructs but does not insult.
From my short experience on this group MOST of the critiques follow pretty much the same philosophy

There's a guy named Nigel who would disagree with what you said.

If someone posts a photo and does not request CC, I will only offer ideas for improvement in a subtle way.
Insofar as this forum is populated primarily by adults, they probably do not need to be told how to respond to photos posted.

I am a novice and am skeptical about posting except on one topic, because I look at others pictures and read comments sometimes, like, "this is crap, I would trash it" and I don't find that to be helpful at all.. I do appreciate constructive criticism that is helpful and will help me develop my skills. I don't want someone to just tell me great photo when it is not, what I would like is help on making it a great photo.....

The comments you mention are totally useless and childish. I would never tell someone that their photo was crap or to trash it. That is worse than blowing sunshine up "there". It is mean and any comments like that should be disregarded as ignorant. If there are problems with a photo let the photog know (IF they ask for input). Photography is an art and can, and is, viewed many different ways. The most important thing to remember is to have fun, enjoy and if you like your photo (for whatever reason) it does not matter what others think. Oh yeah....love
your signature! :)

I left another forum to come here. The reason? On this forum one can expect honest criticism but it is nearly always tempered with kindness. The experts point out the folly of our ways but mostly find something good as well.

I think this whole thing is inherent in society today. Look at the myriad of "talent" shows and sit thorugh 3 1/2 minutes of flat, out of tune bad timing "singing" just for the judges to rave about how great it was. Really?

I guess that puts me in the "tell it straight" camp. If its crap say so, but in a constructive non-dismissive way, If it is great shout it out and point out why you think it is great; other may disagree but at least then they see why.

This is some thing some people want acceptance or praise because they are not informed or not yet learned what they are looking at. I have been kind of a jack of all trades and a master of none. One thing I found out is the more I learn, is I did know I was that dumb. I try to make critique only when asked, then say some thing positive first. Any one who is married has experience at this problem. I had a lady last fall show me some pics taken with a point and shoot, she had done good job over all, but wanted to know what should could do to improve, I gave her my opinion and critique and showed her where she could make changes and she was grateful. It is the way some one frames the question asked as to the way I respond. All so consider how much experience they have. Simon Cowell is blunt but he is usually right, some times it works, some times not.

The sad thing is with the advent of camera phones, and the ability to slam them on Facebook or share them as fast as possible, some people either do not know when an image is out of focus, should have been cropped, etc. The demand to instantly share moments regardless of the image quality, causes a blurrrrrrrreed view of whether or not an images is good, vs a great in focus and well composed image
