I was surprised to see just how much this looks like butterfly scales.
Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 100mm Macro lens, Ring flash at -1, ISO 200 and 1/200-sec at f/14.
Also a reference photo of the inside of the bowl. Its going to be a pretty interesting turn.
This is the rough turn with a start on sanding. I have a ways to go before its ready to seal. I will not be adding stain to this wood.

Love the shot. Wood is so interesting with how the grain differs from piece to piece. What type of wood is this?
Very interesting. Grain is very abstract. What type of wood is that? In my other life(Film Days) I had to move my wood workshop out of the house into the garage. Developing and printing did not like sawdust.

Thank you so much. I have no idea what kind of wood this is but I plan to find out. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you Stan, I have my shop in the garage. Once upon a time I could get my car and a trailer in there. Them days are gone. always seems to work that way. I will let you know when I ID this wood. It looks somewhat like Sapelle.
Neat image and lovely looking bowl.
Nice photo of the wood grain and a very well done bowl. I have a similar wooden bowl given to me by a friend who still lives near where I was born. He cut a walnut tree and then turned the bowl from the wood.
the big pic looks like walnut, but i have never seen walnut at 1:1 mag. what ever it is,sure is pretty
