I took this pic in Sun Lakes SP and was pleasantly surprised to find it in the scrub land. Only other time I saw it was in Glacier Park when I was a kid.
from Wikipedia:
The plant is a low-growing perennial plant with a fleshy taproot and a simple or branched base. The flower stems are leafless, 13 centimetres (0.41.2 in) tall, bearing at the tip a whorl of 56 linear bracts which are 510 mm long. A single flower appears on each stem with 59 oval-shaped sepals.[3] They range in color from whitish to deep pink or lavender. Flowering occurs from April through July.[1] The petals (usually about 15) are oblong in shape and are 1835 millimetres (0.71.4 in) long.[3] At maturity, the bitterroot produces egg-shaped capsules with 620 nearly round seeds.
The plant grows on gravelly to heavy, usually dry soil on grassland, open shrubland or open forest from low elevations to the subalpine. Its range extends from southern British Columbia, through Washington and Oregon east of the Cascade Range to southern California, and east to western Montana, Wyoming, northern Colorado and northern Arizona.[1]
