Wondering if any folks are familiar with this one?

I shot with a guy several months ago and was quite impressed with the leveling column. It was on an ancient tripod system, old heavy and rock solid!

I'm 95% certain that my next tripod will be a Feisol-- probably not this one.. Although it's not a bad choice.

Somebody on UHH reccomended this leveling tripod base from Amazon. Made a big difference in shooting panoramas on uneven ground.

There's also the "horizon" feature is some DSLRs which allows you to level the camera. Some also have a "floating" sensor, which is always level when activated

I have used the horizon feature, but with a big lens I am concerned about tip-overs,particularly on uneven terrain or an adverse wind.

I did a search, but impossible to read every tripod post and nothing with that model! The big difference is ease and quickness. I'm okay now,but it's a lot faster and easier on my arthritic hands with a leveling column.

This is what I use, without the rapid leg locks. Got mine in 2007 after returning the comparably priced Gitzo series 3 which proved to be less stable. I would have needed a series 5 or a RRS equivalent, at twice the price. I routinely use it with a 600mm F4 and a 1.4x TC. Totally satisfied with my results. Leveling base is great when you are not using a collared lens, and setting up a panoramic image.

I'm glad that you weighed in Gene! You had said something in the past regarding Feisol and I couldn't find your reference.

What is your reference to the collared lens non-use about? I have the 80-400 and 200-500 with collars.

Thanks!

You don't need to be that precise with leveling since you can loosen the collar slightly and rotate the camera/lens enough to make level.
