My daughter and her 4 children just stopped by to wish my wife a Happy Mother’s Day. They were all bedecked in their finest clothing. So, what do I do……….I get out my D7100 to get some nice shots of the family. Uncapped the lens, put in the SD cards, turned on my baby, and aimed. When I pushed the shutter button, nothing happened. So, I shut it off and back on, to no avail. I tried replacing the battery, and replacing the cards, not working. I did notice that the little green light on the back of the camera stayed lit. Nothing appears on any of the displays internally nor externally. Please tell me that something simple is wrong. I would appreciate your help, please.

Try this:

Remove the battery and the SD cards, then hold the on/off switch all the way over to the left (where the bulb icon is) then release it and let it snap back to off, reinsert the battery, and turn it on.

Thanks for the information, Grenaderphoto. I transfer my photo files to my main computer, so there are times when they are not in the camera. Could that be a problem?

Maybe the SD card is not properly inserted, or the SD card is defective, or there is some foreign matter in the card slot.

While my camera was still being naughty I thought it must be a problem with the power switch, which kinda made sense because the day the problem started I had been photographing a school sports event and had been turning it on and off in a very dusty environment. So here was my answer. I turned the power on and pulled the power switch all the way over to the 'lightbulb' and held it with my fingernail, and then let it flick back to off with all the power the spring could muster. Problem solved. I couldn't believe it, such camera issues very rarely have such a happy ending and easy solution. I may have had to do the same thing one more time, I can't remember, but that was a good 4 months ago and haven't had any problems since then. I'm not saying it would be as easy to fix for anyone else, but if you have the same problem, it's worth a try.

Could it be the "check engine light"!!
If so, take it to your nearest AAMCO service center!
That's double"AA", honk, honk, M-C-O!!! LoL
Seriously, I'm just kidding....., don't take it to amco, send it to Nikon!!!

The girls had planned a luncheon and had to leave. Therefore, no photos taken. Will have to wait for Father's day instead.

No GAS attack for new camera. I WOULD prefer to get an 85mm lens though.... Lol

As SS recommended, I would send it to Nikon, with a detailed note about what happened an how you fixed it. Have that looked at, have the sensor cleaned, and get it a lube-oil-filter, or, in camera terms, a CLA! Best of luck.

No need to do that. OP has fixed it and the suggestion to send it to Nikon comes after it's working again.

Now if the issue repeats, then that makes sense.
