Sony A6300 Shutter Problem?

My new A6300 sometimes only exposes the top 20% of the frame. The rest of the frame is black. This only happens with the front and back mechanical shutter or the electronic front and mechanical back shutter and my Zeiss Touit 1.8/32 prime lens. The problem disappears if I use silent mode (full electronic shutter) and sometimes disappears if I simply point the camera down and take a photo. I returned the camera to the store and the gave me another one that exhibits the same problem, but much less frequently.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? What are the possible causes? Could it be due to some specific combination of camera settings?

I've had no problems like that. Does it happen with other lenses? Did it happen with the new one before you changed the settings?

Time for that camera to visit Sony. It's new, so it should work like new.

Does that lens work on the A6000? I wonder if there is something that is not connecting between camera and lens. Sony should know about this problem so they can correct it.

This is his second 6300. What he is describing is typical of certain settings with front curtain shutter turned on.

That problem is the Zeiss Touit 1.8 32mm lens, not the camera body. I had the exact problem and discovered a firmware update for the lens was all that was needed to cure the issue. Sony will upgrade the firmware, for free, but you have to send the lens back to them for the fix.

And that's a $720 lens new. I understand his concern now. Firmware updates are important. Some don't bother doing them if discovered unimportant to them.

Zeiss confirmed your explanation. I will mail the lens to Sony for the firmware update. Thanks for your suggestion.
