Amish out in Medina & Ashland county in Ohio are old order and do not have lights &,windshield on buggys but only lanterns; quite a few are hit by cars . Nice SET of pictures!

Amish and Old Order Mennonite buggies are required by PA state regulations to have safety devices such as lights, flashers, reflectors and brakes. They are not special and exempt from the laws although many of them think they are. Many of them equate compliance with the law as religious persecution. I know of no laws that prohibit them from practicing their form of religion but if they want to use the roads that are paid for by taxes that many of them don't pay, they need to do as they're told, just like the rest of us.

I don't know about the windshield, that may just be common sense.

I thought that there was a law but they use the Religious factor here, in as such in other counties which are not Old Order, they have lights etc. . In the last several years there has several buggies fatalities.

Crashes between buggies and cars still happen here in Lancaster County but not as often as before the lights were required. Mostly due to people driving like maniacs and not respecting the horses. Also, there's a problem with drunk buggy drivers but that's not as bad as its been in the past. There are a lot of roads that wind thru the plain people country and there are a lot of plain people living near or on major township and county and state roads and there are a lot of buggies out on the weekends when the tourists show up, a recipe for trouble. As you can see from my avatar, I ride a large motorcycle and I ride the back roads of Lancaster county all the time. I always respect a horse and buggy on the road and do what I can to not spook the horse or horses and never cut them off like many tourists do.

Im not sure. I know I know my son and his wife bought a lot of flowers and hanging baskets there. I only got one plant. But I do enjoy driving the back roads with my camera. So much to see. My sons car was filled with what they bought.

He traded that ford edge in today for a new ford 150 pickup truck. His wife has a new Buick. And the ford he bought has four doors. He was thinking of old dad.

These are wonderful shots, Hal! I just love Lancaster County! Can you tell me where each of these shots were taken? I'm curious what part of Lancaster County you visited.
