Do I need to get another lens?

Every photographer has different needs. I have seen lenses of professional wedding photographers using the Canon 5D Mark 3, and an NFL photographer using the Canon 1DX. Some wedding photographers say always own a prime 85mm, some use zoom lenses instead. An 85mm prime on the football field? My longest zoom goes out 300mm on a Nikon Body. It suits my needs for now. I can go out to about 855mm with my Nikon Coolpix L840.

I do 90% of my work with just two f/2.8 lenses, covering the full frame equivalent of 24mm to 200mm.

Of course, but it's that other 10% that's the killer. :D

I have the Canon T1i/500D camera and the following lenses:

Kit lens - EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II IS
EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III (no IS)
Prime EF 50mm f/1.8 II (no IS)
EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 STM
All 5 of the above are Canon lenses
Prime EF Opteka 85mm f/1.8 (no IS)

Sometimes I feel that I should have another lens that my present lenses don't cover considering my present T1i/500D camera. What lens would you recommend and why---?

I do agree with the comment.
"Replace the EF 75-300 with a used EF 70-300 IS USM lens which will do a much much better job of covering the short to medium telephoto range at an affordable price".
All the other bases you have covered. The Kit Lenses work just fine on you Camera.

Depending on your interest, a 90or 100 mm Macro seems to b about the only range you do not already have covered.
Another option, rent a couple of different lenses and see if they fill a need.

I wasn't sure if I had made the right lens choices; I have found an answer (I think) within all the various responses. I like the whole spectrum of photography (landscapes, macro shots, portraits, etc. I am a retired middle school teacher and am studying photography - I love all aspects of it. I searched for help all over the interenet, etc. but I didn't find any specific answer so I appealed to this forum for help and I've received some very good advice and answers I wasn't able to get elsewhere. Now I am reassured somewhat -- I love this forum; I keep quiet and do a lot of reading and learning (every day). I have bought some spacers and a Ring Flash light I intend to learn how to use. Thanks to you and a LOT of others for your help.

I guess we still don't know what you want to photograph, why you think you need different equipment, nor how much you are thinking about spending, whether on equipment or photo trips.

There is however, a consistent pattern in the responses. From the lens perspective you do have a reasonable range but you have one very weak lens in the mix, the Canon 75-300.

If you want to use longish lenses, then IS is a very helpful thing to have. I made a suggestion of a used and relatively inexpensive way to address that. Others have suggested significantly more expensive but vastly superior alternatives including the Canon EF 100-400 mkII.

So, it comes back to your objectives and your budget. If you don't use the 75-300 telephoto much it may not be worth troubling about, unless you don't use it because the results are not what you want.

Good luck, whatever you choose to do!

If you plan on doing the Macro you mention above you'll need a Canon 105MM Macro or equivalent Lens.

Big Bill -- (I like the nick name --had a buddy in High school called that) Yes, I do have a fisheye lens (didn't list it though) but I AM getting some great responses!

What coverage to you think you're missing?
Your present lenses don't include a fisheye. If that's what you want, then that's what you should get.
On the long end, you only go to 300mm. Do you want more? Then get a longer telephoto.

IOW, you're asking a question we can't answer, because you're asking the wrong question.

Depending on how much money wants to be spent here, there are multiple answers.

An inexpensive way towards close-up photography (psuedo macro) would be inexpensive extension tubes with the EF 50mm lens.

Good macro lenses aren't cheap. However, the 100mm length has advantages in terms of lens to subject distance over shorter lenses like the EF-S 60mm Macro. Great lens, not cheap! It gets complicated, and also rapidly expensive!

There are also 'close up lens adapters' - I don't like the term filters since they are lenses - and the cheap ones are generally not that good. The better ones have a compound construction and can yield good results, but they are not cheap. Canon 500D or 250D for example.

I finally have time to respond. I have been there and back. I literally have four levels of quality of glass and have/had Xt1, 1ti, 2ti, 60D 7D and then added a FF 6D.

- Kit lens - EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (This produced some winning images)

- EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II IS (BIASED AGAINST)

- EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III (no IS)(BIASED AGAINST)

+ Prime EF 50mm f/1.8 II (no IS)(GENERALLY GREAT LENS)

+ EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 STM (great lens)

All 5 of the above are Canon lenses

+ Prime EF Opteka 85mm f/1.8 (no IS)(WIDE SPREAD OF QUALITY)

I WOULD OPT TO DUMP SOME GLASS!

My kit for crop. 10-18 or 10-22; 15-85. If you need longer opt for 70-300 IS USM 70-200 f/4 L.

For me after I figured out what I wanted or was capable of doing I waited for glass at a bargain to come to me. It is surprising the values of used glass out there.

Don't spend money on a expensive trip until you are capable of great images.

Just my take!

Sell ALL of your zoom lenses. Invest. In quality. In zoom lenses that have fast and CONSTANT apertures. Why? If I have to explain the answer is no, you don' need another lens.

No. You don't need more stuff.

If you are bound and determined to spend cash, then buy yourself a plane ticket to go shoot some photos somewhere.

I don't see any L series lenses in your lineup. If you feel you are missing something in your photos it may be that you are looking for images that the more expensive lenses provide. The 70-200 L in either 2.8 or 4 is a really sharp lens, you might rent one and see if that is what you are looking for.

If you were close we could go in field with my lenses for test.

2012 I went to YP/GT and shot with Canon during Canon in the Parks. I only cared about looking at equipment not pictures. From my home to the Parks I passed so many OPs that I hate thinking about it. I am just like the others.
